Trailblazing supermodels Naomi Campbell, Liya Kebede, and Iman cover Essence Magazine's 40th Anniversary Issue. The collector's edition will do double duty as the magazine's weighty September Fall Fashion issue, and will feature the first official spreads by Essence's controversial white fashion director, Elliana Placas. Though it's unknown if Elliana styled the cover, the fashion pages will undoubtedly receive lots of attention.
The rest of the issue is a veritable tribute to black women, and will boast an open letter by Michelle Obama to black women and profiles of 40 black women changing the world.
After 40 years, Essence has certainly evolved, though some have said their content has become less intelligent in recent years. For a select few, Essence's hiring of a white fashion director was the last straw.
Will you be picking up Essence's 40th Anniversary issue this September?
