The president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni (pictured), is undertaking a new strategy to reach out to younger voters as he prepares to seek re-election in February.
At 65, Museveni released a rap song and video to demonstrate that he is hip, even after serving as president since 1986.
The song is called 'U Want Another Rap' and has been in heavy rotation in Uganda on the radio and at dance clubs. There is even a ringtone available.
During a rally to support the well-liked incumbent in northern Uganda, the rap sensation was asked to perform and he obliged. While his skill level may not be comparable to some of the black community's rap legends, he embraces rap's true essence: spreading a message of perseverance and achievement. Check out the translated lyrics in the video.
An AP report notes that not everyone has been as enthusiastic about the president's musical success, pointing to those who asked for new roads rather than another rap.
I can appreciate the Ugandan president for taking the time to explore the interests of young people in his country and to appeal to them as voters. I applaud him for making the effort in November, well in advance of the February election, which he is expected to win against his main challenger Colonel Kizza Besigye for the third time.
But did I mention that he's been in office since 1986? Think about that. Much of Uganda's infrastructure hasn't been touched in at least 30 years. Yes, 30 years. The people of Africa need to be freed from these unconscionable dictators who refuse to give up power. Africans need honest and productive leadership. Not empty lyrics, which President Museveni ironically offers.
If he can rhyme about how he's finally going to hand over the power in Uganda to someone other than himself, maybe then people will listen. And even then I wouldn't count on it.
