Star Jones and La Toya Jackson
Entertainment Weekly has broken the news that Star Jones and La Toya Jackson are set to join the cast of the coming season of 'Celebrity Apprentice.' Jackson is a reality television show veteran, having appeared on the shows 'Armed and Famous' on CBS and 'Celebrity Big Brother' in the UK. But did you know that this is not the first reality show for Star Jones? EW.com has the scoop:

Outside of an appearance last year on a celebrity version of 'Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?' (which, like 'The Apprentice,' is a Mark Burnett production), Jones has been out of the spotlight since her nine-year run as a co-host on 'The View 'ended in 2006. (She did also manage to host a season 2 reunion episode of 'The Bad Girls Club.')

Star Jones may not have as much experience as La Toya Jackson, but her total television experience including her time on her own short lived show, should be more than enough background to help Star perform well. But the greatest asset both women have outside of previous TV experience is a flair for personal drama.

La Toya has remained in the news over the years for her crazy outfits and the strange comments she made about her brother Michael's death. Star Jones has stayed on our radar by commenting publicly on various hot issues, and constantly hitting up red carpets dressed to the nines. When Star was going through her exit from 'The View' she was sure to use the experience to generate a lot of publicity. Even the ending of Jone's marriage provided an opportunity for her to stay in the public eye.

It's interesting that these two women, who are somewhat controversial figures, have been able to garner so much attention because of the stir of commentary they are able to generate by being brazen. Usually we are encouraged in the work place to totally conform, keep our heads down, and not rock the boat. Star Jones and La Toya Jackson show on the contrary that a career can be sustained by occasionally drawing attention to oneself in ways that might seem strong or unusual.

Sure, the entertainment business is different from most others, but it is usually the attention-getters that are able to secure more opportunities for serious work even in an office environment. This is what La Toya Jackson and Star Jones have done through landing their 'Celebrity Apprentice' gigs. While other talented black women remain on the side lines, they are working and that says a lot.

What do you think? Do you think it's better to always conform at work, or are there times when it's better to grab attention that you can then parlay into bigger things?
