Clifford Miller Jr. of Gainesville was a troubled man, with a troubled past, but no one could have guessed that the demons in his head would lead to a shooting spree that would end in two deaths and the wounding of five others.
Now family and neighbors are looking for clues as to why Miller Jr., 24, started a 13-minute shooting spree that killed his 52-year-old father Clifford Miller Sr. and wounded five other men before turning the gun on himself and ending his life.
Gainesville police say that Miller Jr. knew the victims but no motive has been discovered for the shooting.
Now investigators are left to put the broken pieces of the gunman's life back together like a jigsaw puzzle to figure out what triggered the attack.
Miller always seemed to be in trouble, according to court records. Whether they were traffic violations or charges against female friends, Miller Jr. was a mess. After one drunk driving conviction, Miller was forced to take medication and undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Four of the shooting victims are in critical condition, so the death toll could rise.
It's sad, but investigators will likely never find exactly what triggered the attack.
All I know is that the crime couldn't have been committed if Miller Jr. didn't have access to a gun.
It's way too late, I know. At this point, the genie is out of the bottle and guns are available to virtually anyone in any state who wants one, but every time someone goes on a shooting spree and families are left to bury the dead, think of why this situation really exists: easy access to guns.
