"Just because I [wear] all black including head mask as expression and emphasize my outfit, it shouldn't be looked at as racial...There are far more important things 2 bark about. (Jobs, health, education) not a black man wearing all black everything. Are you guys serious? My outfit set 'black people back 100 years' choose your twits wisely. Open Letter to Obama: Black Unemployment Must Be Addressed

Dear Mr. President,

I write this letter with all due respect to yourself, as well as the office of the presidency. Your historic rise up the political ladder has been nothing short of inspirational, and your extraordinary vision has positioned you as one of the most celebrated leaders in the history of the United States. As a fellow scholar and African American male, I applaud your achievements. I am especially excited about how you, Michelle, and your beautiful daughters present such a magnificent image of the African American family.

While the black community remains inspired by your achievements and overwhelmingly sympathetic to your challenges from conservatives, there are concerns that the economic plight of black Americans has not been a priority for the Obama Administration. To be sure, opinions on this matter are far from unanimous. But the numbers tell a story that needs to be heard.

As of last month, black unemployment rose to an astonishing 16.3 percent. This was .7 percent higher than the previous month, with the increase being 700 percent higher than the rise in unemployment for white Americans. Additionally, black teen unemployment is now over 45 percent, compared to just 23 percent for white teens. In addition to massive unemployment, wealth inequality in America remains a persistent problem, causing African Americans to bear the brunt of this economic crisis in ways that are unimaginable to other Americans. Our homes are facing foreclosure more often and we are less able to rely on a source of background wealth to help us get through the toughest times. Yet, while we are the least prepared for the recession, we are being hit with a downturn that is twice as forceful as that being experienced by the rest of America. In fact, even after the recession is over, our unemployment rate will probably be as high or higher than the rate that white Americans are agonizing over right now. The United Nations has investigated this issue as a human rights violation, since it appears that we live in a nation that accepts a black underclass as a default way of life.

To this point, your administration has remained disturbingly silent on the issue of black unemployment. The silence is deafening, but the economic hardship is loud and clear. I am concerned that many of your key economic advisors are unable or unwilling to process and empathize with the depths of black economic misery in America. Many of them are not trained in issues that relate to economic inequality and seem to have little or no desire to make this issue a priority for the administration. In fact, I have yet to hear the words "black man" or "black woman" come out of your mouth in the year 2010.

Most of us are appreciative of the difficulties of being the first black president. We know that America is not ready to put race on the table for discussion, unless it is a case of the Right Wing attacking you for being too black. But there must be some way to show loyalty to the political interests of those who enthusiastically supported you during the 2008 presidential campaign. Many members of this base have either become too disillusioned to vote in the mid-term elections, or are quietly struggling to ensure that they do not undermine your political power by asking your administration to address matters of race. Many black Americans feel abandoned in their suffering and are only comforted by the symbolism of having a black president in the Oval Office.

I, for one, am glad that I supported you for president. While some members of your cabinet might believe that black political support can be taken for granted, I am not sure if that's the case. Energizing your base is an important part of generating political participation, so while many black Americans may not jump ship to the Republican party, there are many millions who may not be inspired to vote. Most of us supported the Obama Presidency on the promise of hope and change. Right now, hope has nearly diminished and not very much has changed in our households. We know you can't do it all on your own, but I'd love to at least see you try a little bit harder.

If we do not find a way to directly confront economic inequality in America, our nation will remain divided. I am hopeful that in the near future, we will see the creation of White House initiatives which provide a much needed national conversation on race. I also ask that there be targeted economic policies created to deal with the consistent problem of chronic unemployment among black teens and the rest of the African American community. The passage of stronger urban jobs bills, along with opening the door for additional government contracts for African American companies can go a long way toward helping to alleviate the pressure being felt right now. The disease of black unemployment is one that must be treated and cannot be ignored, for it undermines community safety and deteriorates the core of the African American family. By failing to administer the proper institutional medicine, we risk allowing that disease to fester and eventually kill a segment of our society. The election of our first black president should be a step forward for our community, but at this point, it appears to be a political trade off. I am hopeful we can do better than that.

Ernest Withers: Key Civil Rights Figure an FBI Informant

Ernest Withers, a legend exposed

If you don't know the name Ernest Withers (pictured above), I can guarantee that you know of his work. Remember the famous and horrible picture of Emmett Till (pictured below)? Withers took that one. Think about nearly every well-known picture of Dr. Martin Luther King you can think of. Well, Withers probably took that one too. Ernest Withers had access to Civil Rights leaders like no other.

He was also found to have been an informant for the FBI.
Ernest Withers, a legend exposed

The Commercial Appeal
in Memphis conducted a two-year investigation in to the life of Withers, who died in 2007. The investigation found that Withers allegedly worked with two FBI agents to keep an eye on the Civil Rights Movement. Withers was known to have been very close to Dr. King and to have had his trust.

Ernest Withers, a legend exposed
"It is an amazing betrayal," said Athan Theoharis, a historian, told the New York Times. "It really speaks to the degree that the FBI was able to engage individuals within the civil rights movement. This man was so well-trusted."

Reports say that from 1968 to 1970, Withers provided photos and other detailed information to the FBI about the schedules and whereabouts of Civil Rights figures.

Withers' identity was apparently released by accident.

In most of the FBI reports, references to Withers were blocked out, replaced by his informant number, ME 338-R, but on several occasions, agents forgot to remove his name.

Withers had eight children before he died, and some speculate that this might have been the reason he chose to accept money from the FBI. If that's the case, this would be a disturbing reminder of how our financial circumstances can ultimately impact our ability to be free. It might be presumptuous to think that Withers wanted to sell his friends out to the FBI, so I can only imagine that his financial situation played a role in his decision to undermine one of the most significant movements in African-American history.

The fact that Ernest Withers appears to have been an FBI informant not only rewrites quite a few history books, it also opens the door to another disturbing question: Who killed Dr. King and how did they know where he'd be at the time of his murder?

The fact that Withers "just happened" to be at the Lorraine Motel at the time of King's death as well as the fact that he'd gained so much of Dr. King's trust, makes us only contemplate the unthinkable.

2010 Fall Fashion Week: Tracy Reese

Spring was certainly in season at Tracy Reese's latest show, though not a single one of her signature bud or blossom prints could be seen. Instead, Tracy offered whisper thin cotton and chunky knits in solid colors punctuated by a watercolor here, an ethnic or tie-dye print there. Still traditional pretty Tracy, but more refined-grown up.
Hippie, floppy hats topped safari inspired brown wrap dresses while rose colored oversized sunglasses and readers accented calf length loose knit frocks. The mood was groovy and clean, and Tracy sparkled as she typically does with uber feminine pencil skirts, short shorts, and seductive bow front jackets in white, blue, peach, light brown, light purple, and black.

Though celebrity front row attendees Angela Simmons, Kelly Osbourne, Aisha Tyler, Veronica Webb, Kelly Osbourne, and Denise Richards certainly have different styles, each could find a look that spoke to them in this collection. Tracy designs for every woman. Though some critics may have thought the collection 'safe,' it works for Tracy, and for the myriad of women whose only requirement when going out is to look flawless. And gorgeous.

Here's the teaser trailer to 'The Inheritance,' which Robert O'Hara is making his directorial debut. The film is produced by Effie T. Brown and her production company, Duly Noted Inc.

Five cousins find out about a centuries old family ritual of sacrifice to an African spirit and must fight for their lives or take their place in a long line of offered souls.

The story centers on family friends (played by Golden Brooks, Darrin Dewitt Henson, Rochelle Aytes, Shawn Michael Howard, and D.B Woodside) who gather during a winter storm for a 'secret' reunion at the family estate. The connection to their tortured history is one of only passing fascination. The reunion turns deadly when the elders have to make good on an ancient pact with a spirit of an ancestor. Now, it's this generation's turn to make the ultimate sacrifice. It is their duty and their destiny, but they won't give up without a fight to survive.

Also starring in the film are Keith David, Novella Nelson, Adriane Lenox, André De Shields, and Lanre Idewu.

The film was previously known as 'My Place in the. Horror.'

The film played at Jeff Friday's 14th Annual American Black Film Festival in June where the Grand Jury Prize for Best Performance by an Actor was awarded to Brooks for her performance.

Serena Williams Practicing Again, Plans to Play in Fed Cup Final‎Maybe it was Venus Williams losing once again to Kim Clijsters at the U.S. Open last weekend that motivated Serena to hit the court again. Regardless of the reason, though, it's been a couple of months since Serena had surgery on her foot after cutting it on broken glass at a restaurant. This summer she had to sit out the U.S. Open and the World Team Tennis season to heal from the injury, but according to the Associated Press, she's up and about and practicing once again.
"I'm obviously out of the (walking) boot, so I'm in a different boot, not that hideous boot," Williams told the Associated Press.
Apparently she plans to represent the United States in the Fed Ex Cup in November but still hasn't given a definitive date on when she'll be 100 percent and able to play in full action again.

In the meantime, Serena was in New York for the launch of the M Foundation, a nonprofit started by the creators of the athletic skin product Mission SkinCare. She was joined by retired NBA center Alonzo Mourning, Mets third baseman David Wright, Olympic softball gold medalist Jessica Mendoza and UFC champion Georges St. Pierre. The nonprofit is intended to raise money and fund research on skin diseases as well as offer scholarships to young athletes involved in community service.

Fighting Fat: Celebrity Nutritionist Dr. Ro Joins 'Dr. Oz'
She's the go-to guru on all things nutrition and last year, she helped get 'The View' co-host Sherri Shepherd get swimsuit ready for OK! Magazine.

(Read: 'Cover Girl: Sherri Shepherd Graces OK Mag in Swimsuit.')

Now Dr. Ro (full name: Rovenia Brock, Ph.D) is joining Dr. Mehmet Oz on his syndicated daytime talk show 'The Dr. Oz Show' in an effort to get America healthy.

On his Sept. 13 episode, Dr. Oz introduced his new campaign 'Just 10 Pounds' - a program that includes five commandments for losing 10 pounds that are designed to keep you motivated and help you lose weight and maintain it.

To help facilitate the 'Just 10' campaign is Dr. Oz's "A-Team" of experts that include Dr. Ro, interventionist Brad Lamm, trainer Gunnar Peterson and 'Dr. Oz Show's' chief medical consultant Dr. Michael Roizen.
Dr. Ro
Ro, who has also contributed to NBC's 'Today Show,' CBS's 'The Early Show,' ABC's 'Good Morning America,' and National Public Radio, is excited about being a part of Dr. Oz's all-star ensemble and believes this campaign is just what America needs.

"I'm honored to be working with him. I can't think of any better way to serve the public. There are few things that get me charged more than living out my purpose and serving others in this capacity, well this is it for me," Dr. Ro told BV Buzz. "I've been on the quest to get America healthy for most of my career. I will assist Dr. Oz with helping America to get healthy first by losing 'Just 10 Pounds,' a decision that can change lives. I will contribute by blogging for Dr. Oz's website, appear on the talk show and live web-chats all by providing the nutrition and health information to help America with its' food choices."

Ro, who penned the book 'Dr. Ro's 10 Secrets to Livin' Healthy' (Bantam Books), explained that before she became a nationally known nutritionist, she worked to get her own family healthy first.

"I first started with my own family and community - the black community - because as African-Americans we have suffered needlessly and disproportionately from diseases related to diet and lifestyle when compared to other groups. But today - being obese and overweight and dealing with the attendant diseases that go with it - is no longer a black problem; this is an American problem! Especially when you consider that over two-thirds of the U.S. population is affected," she expressed.

Sherri Shepherd, Elizabeth Hasslebeck & Dr. Ro
The Washington, DC-based health expert was a fixture on 'The View' last year as a part of Shepherd's highly-publicized weight-loss campaign.

"I had a blast! First, you have to know that Sherri Shepherd is one of the most generous spirits alive! I loved working with her and helping her to reach her health and nutrition goals in the face of Diabetes, albeit on TV-with her enormous schedule, wasn't easy, but it was doable and we had fun in the process. It was a great experience! I'd do it again," she shared.

Ro said there are two other celebrities she would also like to work with as well.

"I would like to work with Oprah Winfrey, but I know she's busy," Ro laughed. "I would also like to coach Fantasia. I think I could really help her get to a good place in general. Other than that, any one of them that would like to hDr. Roave me. I go where I'm needed!"

In addition to the 'Just 10 Pounds' campaign with Dr. Oz and working on a new book that she hopes to release next year, Dr. Ro is also developing an educational series for children called 'Dr. Ro's Fit Kidz.'

"Dr. Ro's Fit Kidz' is a DVD series for 7 to 11-year-olds to learn how to embrace living healthy lifestyles through food and fitness. I am looking for a TV home for the series, as I created it for a TV audience. We are now attempting to get it into schools and after-school programs nationwide. It really is a fun and creative series that's 'out of this world!' We already received a proclamation from Washington, D.C.'s mayor proclaiming July 22nd 'Fit Kidz Day.' We will receive a City Council resolution soon. I'm very proud of this work. It's some of my best work ever! I believe with every fiber of my being that it has to potential to help end childhood obesity in this country. In the series we feature Olympic gold medalist Dominique Dawes, members of the Washington Freedom women's soccer team and more," she explained.

In the end, Ro's message is simple!

"My passion is helping America one bite at a time," she closed.

Openly Gay and Former NBAer John Amaechi Dissed at Gay Bar

Former NBA star John Amaechi refused entry into gay bar amid rowBack in 2007, former NBA player John Amaechi made headlines, after he released his memoir, "Man in the Middle," announcing he was gay. He was the first, and up until this date, only NBA player to come out of the closet. Since the announcement, Amaechi has been involved in political activism working with Amnesty International as well as a broadcast announcer for basketball games in England.
So with all of that, you would think that Amaechi would be wholly accepted by any gay community right? Not so.

According to the BBC, Amaechi is considering legal action against a gay bar called "Crunch" in Manchester, England's gay village neighborhood. Amaechi said the doorman at the venue told him he was "big, black and could be trouble" and wouldn't let him in the bar.
"I want an explanation of what happened - a real true explanation - and an apology, and they have not in any way been forthcoming with that," Amaechi told the BBC. "I think when you go to the village or when you go to any venue in a progressive city like Manchester, there shouldn't be a policy on the door that says the way that you look means you shouldn't be able to get in to a venue. I'm going to pursue this through all the channels I have because, when there are issues of bigotry, we should pursue them very strongly."
According to Matt Taylor, manager of the club, though, his staff never said any racist comments to Amaechi and were correct in refusing him entry.

"Whilst I understand it is upsetting to be turned away from a venue when on a night out, to justify a refusal of entry by provoking a racist debate is completely uncalled for," Taylor said. "Following a discussion with the staff that were present at the time, we are satisfied that there was neither racism shown nor bigoted comments made as suggested. Crunch is a large venue in the gay village employing people of all different groups: white, black, gay, straight and more - we do not discriminate on any grounds. These allegations are outrageous and completely unfounded."
In the meantime, Amaechi will continue with his broadcasting and speaking career.

2010 Fall Fashion Week: Backstage with Ted Gibson at Vena Cava

Each season you can count on spotting fashions elite at the Vena Cava show and spring 2011 was no exception. Elle's senior fashion editor Kate Lanphear and Bergdorf Goodman's Linda Fargo were front row and center in support of industry darlings Sophie Buhai and Lisa Maycock, the creative duo behind-the-line. Back for a second season was hair heavy weight Ted Gibson and his team of stylists from the Ted Gibson Salon New York, who we caught up with backstage.
"I'm excited to work with Sophie and Lisa again. This season the inspiration came from an old Vogue that embodied that 70s Halston chic look," said Gibson, who is also the lead hairstylist on TLC's 'What Not to Wear.' It was the return of the turban this past spring and Gibson remakes the look a bit hipper and more youthful for spring 11 by not covering the hair entirely, but just framing the crown. The hair was first texturized than pulled back into sleek chignon and finished with a bandeaus scarf. This is the perfect look to rock at the beach by day. Then mix it up by removing the scarf for a poolside pulled-back, polished evening style.
To get this look at home you'll need to:
Prep hair with Ted Gibson Build It ($19.19, beauty.com). This product will give your hair volume and texture when blow drying. Next, take a dime size drop of Ted Gibson Tame It ($19.19, beauty.com) and work it throughout the stands to help tame frizzies while you finger-comb your hair into low ponytail. Once hair is secured into a ponytail twist it up into the bun style of your choose. Try wearing a silk scarf with a pop of color in red if you're hair is deep dark color to have the full va-va-voom effect.
The two-time Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund Award nominees recently launched a lower priced line, Viva Vena!, made out of organic jersey and mixed with silk details. Viva Vena! embodies the cultish feel of Vena Cava, but retails for under $200 and has a more casual feel. The Viva Vena! luxe for less label is available online at Barneys.com, Saks.com and Tobi.com. If online shopping does not tickle your fancy, head to Scoop NYC, Nordstrom and Opening Ceremony stores where the line is also being carried.

Studies on Gender, Wealth & Happiness Don't Scratch the Surface of Economic Impact on Blacks

$

african american wealth gap
A couple of recent articles provided some new theories and information about the importance of income to happiness and changes in the average earnings between urban men and women. While these statistics are interesting, what is more interesting to note is that the studies, and the sites that reported on them, failed to take race into account in discussing issues like wealth, gender and happiness.

In one article, Robert Frank of the Wall Street Journal provides background on a recent study done to gauge the impact of higher income on happiness. According to the study , a person's day-to-day contentment (emotional well-being) rises until that person reaches $75,000 in annual income, and then it stops. On the other hand, a person will continue to have a higher "life-assessment" (broader satisfaction with one's place in the world) in connection with increases in income.

Of course this number is very general. I doubt that $75,000 would be the high point for contentment in Washington, D.C. where I live, just as the number might be less in a city with a low cost of living like Little Rock, Arkansas (where I used to live). In addition, given the large wealth disparities that exist between black and white individuals, and the generally higher levels of debt held by black people, it would be interesting to see a racial breakdown of the study results. I highly doubt a large percentage of black people (no matter where they live) would give $75,000 as their cutoff point for happiness. Especially as no amount of money can soothe the additional social stress blacks have to endure to earn said income in our still racially troubling society. Did they measure that in the study?

Another article on Lemondrop.com references a recent study that states single women between the ages of 22 and 30 and living in larger urban areas are now earning about 8% more than their male counterparts. This is a dramatic difference compared to the national average: women with a bachelor's degree still earn about 33% less than a man with the same degree. The study gives some reasons for this shift, including the higher numbers of women in urban areas attending college and obtaining high-earning jobs, in addition to the disproportionate impact of job losses in the industrial sector on male workers.

From the African American perspective, this news is not all that surprising. Given that urban areas often have the highest concentrations of black residents, and because we know that there is a huge disparity in the number of black women graduating from college compared to black men, I'm surprised this gendered income gap isn't a little higher. Because of the large numbers of black males unable to find work for a variety of reasons, if this second study was analyzed from a race-specific angle I would not be surprised if the income difference for urban black men and women was found to be larger.

+EEOC Says Many Government Agencies Fail to Submit Mandated Diversity Reports

Although both articles are simply analyzing studies done by others, it is interesting to see that neither article even mentioned the obvious impact of race on both issues. Aside from the fact that for a variety of unjust reasons black people on average have far less wealth than their white counterparts, there is also the issue of black people being paid less than their white colleagues to perform the same job to consider. It clearly wasn't. I'm sure that may impact a person's happiness, regardless of the dollar amount. Furthermore, to address the issue of higher women's salaries in urban areas without mentioning the impact of the mass incarceration of black males which leads to a lack of job opportunities describes a failure in understanding the complexity of the issues at hand due to race.

Articles like these are an answer to those who ask: "Why do black people need their own Web sites, television stations, magazines, etc.?" Because far too often the mainstream perspective is still only concerned with the general, in other words, white point-of-view. These statistics don't provide insights that will help the black community grow economically. "Mainstream" media outlets fail to understand the specific economic issues affecting African American audiences, and seem content to ignore their ignorance.

Boris Kodjoe Wants to Help You Suit Up

He was an irresistible deliveryman in 'Soul Food' and a suave basketball player in 'Brown Sugar.' Now, after packing up his courier uniform and athletic shorts, Boris Kodjoe will slip into tailored threads for the new NBC spy drama 'Undercovers,' premiering on September 22. In real life, the debonair actor and former model is providing inexpensive custom-made suits and shirts for men and women with his new fashion line, Alfa, which stands for "affordable luxury for all." Chatting with Black Voices about the unique line, Kodjoe shared style advice and fessed up to some of his memorable fashion mistakes.

What inspired you to create Alfa?

Everyone deserves shirts and suits that fit and won't break the bank. Growing up, my brother [and business partner] Patrick and I couldn't afford clothes like that. We had long arms, so shirts never fit right. Everyone comes in different shapes and sizes. Off the rack clothing sometimes doesn't fit. It can be a constant struggle finding what fits you and sometimes you end up settling. Alfa is affordable -- starting at 30 bucks. You can't beat that. Just [go to www.worldofalfa.com,] input your size, choose from 150 fabrics, and select the colors, cuffs and buttons. It's a very easy interactive 3-D experience. You are the designer. These clothes are made for you, by you.

How often do you design shirts and suits on your site?

I design three or four shirts a week. I wore Alfa to the Emmys this year. A $30 light pink shirt and $150 black tux with pink lining. [My wife, Nicole Ari Parker] has fun with it too. She designs shirts for her dad and friends. It can be addicting!

How would you describe your style?

I like classic European fitted suits and shirts, solid colors, and understated patterns. I'm all about comfort and a classic look. I really like the style of Sidney Poitier and the late Steve McQueen. That's my taste.

You're always impeccably dressed. Can you share some of your style secrets?

Wear clothes that hug your body. Clothes are meant to frame your body, not hang off. I think suits are always a great look. Every man needs four or five suits that include business, casual, and summer suits. Don't wear a suit with more than three buttons. One or two button suits are in fashion now. Your suit jacket sleeves should reach down right into the palm of your hand and come down to your first knuckles -- never longer than that. Oh, and don't put your shirt collar over suit collar. That's so John Travolta in 'Saturday Night Fever'. That doesn't work anymore.

Can you share some of your fashion faux pas?

When I was 11, I insisted on stuffing everything in my pants. I'd wear sweaters and stuff it in my pants. My pants were puffed out. I looked like I was smuggling stuff! I also remember wearing this black and silver shirt, with a weird pattern, to an NAACP awards ceremony. It had a huge collar. I looked like a genie that just jumped out of a lamp. It was all wrong.

How vocal are you in the wardrobe decisions on the set of 'Undercovers'?

I'm wearing Alfa on the show. We created the look of the character, Steven Bloom. His style is sophisticated and classy -- kind of a James Bond look.

You have two kids. Are they fashion savvy?

Sophie is five and it's a big fight when it comes to what she wears. We put her clothes out, but she'll want to wear something else and ends up looking like Lady Gaga! Lots of ruffles, headbands, flowers, and leggings. After a while, as a parent, you just let her wear it. My son, Nicolas, he's three, and he's into anything athletic. So he's mostly wears basketball shorts and sneakers. [Last week] he wore his cleats to school. I reminded him his game is on Saturday. But he didn't care. He wanted to wear the cleats!

We all know rappers love clothing lines, and now actors want a piece of the action. Actress Gabrielle Union is about to tap into fashion. We caught up with Union at the Mont Blanc pen launch with John Lennon this Sunday in NYC. She told Black Voices that she is putting the finishing touches on her latest project, her very own clothing line which will be called Love & Blessings by Gabrielle."The line is inspired by her sister, who is full figured and has a hard time finding flattering clothing. Union intends to change the game and design pieces that will bring sexy back -- to the plus size ladies that is!.

"My sister is very plus-size and curvy," Union told Black Voices. "As with many black women, we have a harder time finding clothes to complement our curves, so I want to make clothes for women at any and all sizes that look absolutely great on them."

Miss Union may face lots of competition in fashion but she intends to keep her price points low while offering great and affordable pieces for everyone, not just plus-size women. Like Mary J. Blige, Union hopes to debut her collection with HSN/QVC. This sister certainly knows how to put together an outfit and her fans will be most likely to cop a couple pieces and look just as fab.

Cleveland Mother Arrested for Torturing Her Kids in House of Horrors

Cleveland Mother Arrested for Torturing Her Kids in House of Horrors

A 14-year-old boy frantically ran out of his Cleveland home last Wednesday covered in blood. He ran to a neighbor's house desperately seeking refuge from the woman who had beaten him to a pulp. The monster who had attacked the young boy was his own mother. The neighbor immediately called police, and Talthina Jackson was arrested.

Jackson is due in court on Tuesday for 12 counts of child endangerment, felony assault, domestic violence and aggravated menacing -- all horrific acts of torture that she inflicted upon her own children (two sons, 14 and 15, and daughter, 8 months).

Investigators were sickened by what the twisted mom allegedly did to her boys. According to Cuyahoga County Spokesperson Ryan Miday, when the 37-year-old mother caught her 14-year-old playing on the computer in her bedroom, she thought he was stealing from her. Upon her discovery, she bit his jaw, beat the boy mercilessly first with a set of keys and then with an aerosol can, choked the boy, and finally pummeled him with a hot iron, scalding his leg and leaving an imprint. She also threatened her son with a knife.

Police records state that the 14-year-old had been tortured from January to August.

The 14-year-old had also endured other criminal acts of abuse, such as being locked in his bedroom for so long that he had to urinate out of the window and defecate in the closet for fear of being hit for leaving the room.

As if that wasn't enough, when Jackson allegedly entered his bedroom and noticed the feces, she made him eat it and then gave him a plastic bag in which to vomit. In another incident, prosecutors stated that Jackson thought the boy had urinated on plastic that was laid out to paint, so she made him lick it up. The liquid was cat urine.

Reportedly, Jackson also made her 14-year-old eat cat food, after she realized he fed the cats before she had. When the boy threw it up, she made him eat his own vomit, according to prosecutor Jeffrey Schnatter.

Jackson's 15-year-old boy was discovered covered in scars from beatings with a pole.

Police are investigating why social workers had been called to the residence in early August. In the meantime, all three children have been placed in foster care.

Oprah to Cost Australian Taxpayers $2.8 Million for Show: Weigh In

Oprah
Oprah Winfrey is receiving heat for the $2.8 million it will cost the Australian government to bring 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' to Australia next year. As reported on Newser.com:

Oprah's bringing her audience to Australia-and the Aussie taxpayers will be footing a chokable chunk of the bill. The Australian government is contributing some $2.8 million toward the cost of bringing the Oprah Winfrey Show to the country later this year. Officials say the price is a bargain considering the amount of publicity for Australian tourism that Oprah's trip will generate, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

Read the rest on Newser.com.

According to the Herald, "About 3000 of Winfrey's Australian fans will be invited to sit in the audience at Sydney Opera House." That is quite a coup for the Australian government. It seems to me that they are getting Oprah on the cheap.

It's wonderful that Ms. Winfrey is doing something so innovative on her show, and that she is reaching out to her international fans. But as $2.8 million is basically chump change to a country like Australia with a robust economy, I am curious about why Oprah chose this nation to help with what almost amounts to a charitable gift. Australian officials are right -- Oprah coming to your country is the kind of publicity that is worth any price.

It would be interesting to know why Winfrey chose Australia and not a struggling country that could really use the shot in the arm. Of course it's Oprah's choice to go to Australia. But at the same time, with a brand as powerful as Winfrey's, if she is going to give away hundreds of millions of dollars in publicity it begs the question -- why not give it to an African nation, or a similar beautiful country in need?

Bob Marley's Family Loses Copyright Case

Bob Marley's Family Loses Copyright Case

The copyrights for some of Bob Marley's greatest recording have been awarded to a record company in a decision that defeated Rita Marley's (pictured below) quest for millions of dollars in damages from recording interests.

The UMG Recordings unit of Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group will now control the copyrights for five Marley albums produced for Island Records from 1973 to 1977. The albums, 'Catch a Fire,' 'Burnin', 'Natty Dread,' 'Rastaman Vibrations' and 'Exodus,' were the first international releases for the reggae icon and represent the golden age of Marley's recordings.

A few simple legal directives from Marley, who died in 1981 of cancer, could have helped his survivors avoid the courtroom battles that have surrounded his estate for decades, but the devout Rasta left no guidance as to who should claim his legacy and profits.

Bob Marley's Family Loses Copyright Case
At this point, it is a recording company, not his widow, Rita, nor his nine children, who appear to be the major victors in this fight. The judge found that Marley's recording were "works made for hire" as defined under U.S. copyright law.

One benefit of the decision will likely be that Marley's music should get far better distribution to younger generations unfamiliar with his groundbreaking work. That's a good thing, but while it seems the record company has the law on its side, it doesn't seem right that Marley's family is cut out of the profits.

Marley's family sued UMG for withholding royalties and failing to consult the family on licensing decisions such as the use of Marley's music on cell phone ring tones.

President Obama Gives 2010 Back-to-School Speech

President Obama Gives 2010 Back To School Speech

Well, the kiddies are back in school! President Barack Obama has taken to the nation's airwaves yet again to offer an insightful pep talk on what course students should set on their educational back-to-school path.

The speech was delivered at Philadelphia's Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration Middle-High School, one of the best college-preparatory public schools in Pennsylvania at 1:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday.

Last year, Obama spoke to the nation's children about the importance studying hard, staying the course in school and taking responsibility for their actions. This year, our president addressed how "education has never been more important," and he urged students to work hard in order to reach their goals.

"I'm sure there will be times in the months ahead when you're staying up late cramming for a test, or dragging yourselves out of bed on a rainy morning, and wondering if it's all worth it. Let me tell you, there is no question about it. Nothing will have as great an impact on your success in life as your education."

Unlike last year's education speech, which was filled with controversy because right-wingers accused Obama of using the event to promote his political agenda, this year's address was met with thunderous applause and nods of approval.

Our president reminded all young people that they will need to prepare themselves academically for what lies ahead in the workplace in order to compete internationally:

"Nothing will have as great an impact on your success in life as your education. More and more, the kinds of opportunities that are open to you will be determined by how far you go in school. In other words, the farther you go in school, the farther you'll go in life. And at a time when other countries are competing with us like never before; when students around the world are working harder than ever, and doing better than ever; your success in school will also help determine America's success in the 21st century."

There was also a personal account about how our beloved president was not always the most motivated student. He talked about a conversation he had with his mom, where she suggested that he was a tad too "casual" about his future:

"And my attitude was what I imagine every teenager's attitude is in a conversation like that. I was like, I don't need to hear all this. So, I started to say that, and she just cut me right off. You can't just sit around, she said, waiting for luck to see you through. She said I could get into any school in the country if I just put in a little effort. Then she gave me a hard look and added, "Remember what that's like? Effort?" It was pretty jolting, hearing my mother say that. But eventually, her words had their intended effect. I got serious about my studies. I made an effort. And I began to see my grades - and my prospects - improve. And I know that if hard work could make the difference for me, it can make the difference for you, too."

With all of the controversy around the location of a proposed Islamic center in downtown Manhattan, Obama touched upon how all students should be respectful of differences:

"Life is precious, and part of its beauty lies in its diversity. We shouldn't be embarrassed by the things that make us different. We should be proud of them. Because it's the things that make us different that make us who we are. And the strength and character of this country have always come from our ability to recognize ourselves in one another, no matter who we are, or where we come from, what we look like, or what abilities or disabilities we have."

Obama's pro-education back-to-school message will probably spark little-to-no controversy this year and right-wing politicians and commentators should be able to get a good night's sleep tonight.

Rep. Charlie Rangel In Primary Fight Of His Life

He's served in Congress for almost 40 years, but Tuesday's primary in New York will be unlike any other for Democratic Congressman Charles Rangel.

The 80-year-old Rangel is fighting five challengers and an ethics trial in the House later this month on 13 alleged violations.
In years past, his re-election has been a slam dunk. While he is expected to win again, Rangel's taking nothing for granted.
On the eve of the primary, robocalls using former President Bill Clinton's voice went out telling voters: "We need Charlie to go back to Washington, to work with President Obama to say, 'Yes.' "

In July, Obama called the allegations against Rangel troubling and said in a CBS interview that he hoped the embattled congressman could end his career in dignity.

Of Rangel's five opponents, Adam Clayton Powell IV has the biggest name recognition. He is the son of the late U.S. Rep. Adam Clayton Powell, who served from 1945 to 1971 and was defeated by Rangel after a scandal-plagued career.

Despite Powell's recognition, The New York Times editorial board said the assemblyman has done little in Albany and instead endorsed Joyce Johnson, a former business executive and educator who has run for state offices.
As other candidates seized on the ethics cloud hanging over him, Rangel has remained defiant, declaring nothing "will stop me from clearing my name from these vile and vicious charges."

Those charges include alleged income tax and financial disclosure violations and using his influence to solicit donations for a college policy center bearing his name from corporate heads and others before the House Ways and Means Committee.
Rangel chaired the committee before being forced to step aside because of the accusations.

Tuesday's turnout will also show whether Rangel has kept pace with the changing demographics in Harlem, the heart of his district.

What's been known as the "capital of black America" is now majority Latino with a growing population of gay white men.

Dr. Boyce Video: Black Relationships Don't Seem To Work, Why?

PRODUCTION PLAYER! DO NOT DELETE.

One consistent topic of conversation within the African American community is the state of our relationships. We see scores of people choosing to get together, but they don't always want to stay together. Many of our children don't have mothers and fathers, but are granted a pile of baby's mamas and baby daddies. Some of the men aren't paying child support, and some of the women aren't making good choices when deciding who to sleep with. What's the problem?

Rather than leaving this as one of the annual topics at the Essence Music Festival, I thought I'd bring in my panel of relationship experts to help us talk through some of this. Given that black relationships are obviously critical to the raising of black children and sustaining the black family, it's important that we discuss these issues.

Dr. Boyce Watkins is the founder of the Your Black World Coalition and a Scholarship in Action Resident of the Institute for Black Public Policy. To have Dr. Boyce commentary delivered to your email, please click here.
