No Decision On Whether Reggie Bush Gets to Keep His Heisman

$

Filed under:

Anyone even remotely familiar with the sports world is well aware of reports that former USC star Reggie Bush is at risk of having his Heisman Trophy taken away from him. The return of the Heisman would likely be related to NCAA violations that allegedly took place within the USC program during the time when Bush played for them. Bush didn't speak in detail on the issue when he was asked about it.

"At this point, it's kind of out of my hands," Bush said Wednesday after practice with the New Orleans Saints.

Bush would not confirm or deny whether he spoke with the Heisman Trophy Trust about losing the award. Executive Director Robert Whalen said that no decision has yet been made.

USC lost scholarships and was banned from post season play after the NCAA determined that a long list of rules had been broken by the university and its coaching staff. Bush was among those found to have accepted what the NCAA defines to be illegal gifts and financial support.

I am still a bit confused about what Reggie Bush's Heisman has to do with any of USC's NCAA violations. If the idea is that poor character would serve as their justification for stripping him of the award, then that point is certainly questionable. The truth is that if the character of the NCAA itself was being measured, they would fail almost every test. Thousands of critics across America have consistently questioned the NCAA's policies toward its athletes and accuse the organization of stripping players and their families of the right to earn a living from the billions they earn on the field.

The great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, " An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law."

While Reggie Bush is certainly not going to go to prison for violating a set of contrived policies created by the NCAA, the reality is that he is college athletics' version of the runaway slave. During slavery, men and women were punished severely for breaking the law by demanding their right to be compensated for their own labor. Violating NCAA regulations could be considered to be one of the most ethical and just things a college athlete, coach or sports agent can do. Most of them understand that without Reggie Bush and his family, both USC and the NCAA would have lost out on millions of dollars in revenue. But instead of giving Reggie and his family the right to negotiate for a living wage like the rest of us in America, Congress allows the NCAA to violate the labor rights of athletes and their families by keeping those billions of dollars to themselves.

I mentioned in a prior article that I believe that all black athletes should boycott the Heisman trophy anyway. I'm not sure why we wait in line hoping that this piece of metal can validate us for what the world already knows that we can do. Seven out of the last 10 Heisman Trophy winners were white quarterbacks, and it's rare that black athletes get that chance to be the kind of golden boy that the NCAA markets well enough to be certified with the Heisman. Rather than sitting and waiting for the Heisman Trust to take away the award, perhaps Reggie Bush may want to consider just giving it back.

t.i. axe endorsement deal

From Hip Hop Wired:

T.I.'s run-ins with the law may cost him more than a tarnished reputation, they may cost him his most recent endorsement deal.

The Atlanta rapper that was arrested in late August after being found with marijuana and ecstasy pills, could lose his deal with Axe, the body spray, shower gel, anti-perspirant, and deodorant maker for men.

According to TMZ, a rep for the company says they're "troubled by [T.I.'s] arrest" and have been forced into "reviewing their promotional activities" with the rapper.

As of late T.I. still appears on the company website but if his endorsement

deal is "axed" that could soon change.

Tip recently performed a "One Night Only" secret show in New York

sponsored by the company.

Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck Exploit 9/11 for Profit

Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck Exploit 9/11 for Profit, Palin to join Beck at Anchorage 9/11 event‎

For all those people who thought the outrageous rhetoric coming from Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin was about anything other than the Benjamins, you were wrong.

Fresh off of his free Washington, D.C., rally, where he claimed to "restore honor" to America, Beck and Palin are restoring decimals to their wallets by charging anywhere from $73.75 to $225 per ticket to hear them speak on 9/11, according to the AP.

The event's 4,500 tickets have already been sold, netting a minimum of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Now, both Beck and Palin have made themselves very wealthy with their divisive, ignorant and (often) untrue statements. ABC News estimated in April that Palin had raked in at least $12 million since last July 2009. She earns $250,000 per episode for her television show about Alaska and demands $100,000 per speaking engagement. I'm sure that figure is higher by now.

Beck has also done well for himself by making ridiculous statements, such as calling President Barack Obama racist. Forbes estimated that Beck made $32 million in 2009.

"I could give a flying crap about the political process," Beck told Forbes. "We're an entertainment company."

That's why both Beck and Palin should be ashamed of themselves for exploiting the 9/11 anniversary for their own financial gain.

When asked why the event was being held on 9/11, event organizer Chris Cox called it a "coincidence." He claimed he didn't want to compete with the Alaska State Fair, which was being held on Sept. 4th.

Why not hold the event on Sept. 12 or another date that accommodates both Palin's and Beck's schedules? The problem with these two taking serious issues facing this country and turning them into cartoon-like issues complete with uninformed and outrageous comments is that people actually take their comments as facts.

Millions of Americans, including the 4,500 people who paid to see these two speak, are taking Beck and Palin's commentary on everything from health care, immigration, race relations and foreign relations and using it to inform their opinions on these important topics.

Meanwhile, as Beck himself stated so clearly, he's in the business of entertaining and getting paid.

The result is the erosion of decent civic discourse in this country. It's now about who can say the most outrageous thing or who can twist facts and history to fit their version of events no matter how nonsensical that version of events may be.

Even some Republicans acknowledge that Beck, Palin and Rush Limbaugh are now the de facto leaders of a major American political party.

"There were no death panels in the (healthcare) bill ... and to encourage that kind of fear is just the lowest form of political leadership. It's not leadership. It's demagoguery,'' said Rep. Bob Inglis, a South Carolina Republican who lost his primary.

Ingles said that people like Limbaugh, Beck and Palin are "preying on" the "fears'' of Americans.

"I think we have a lot of leaders that are following those (television and talk radio) personalities and not leading,'' he said. "What it takes to lead is to say, 'You know, that's just not right.'''

Dwight Howard, Ex-Wife Royce Have a War of the Roses

$

Filed under:

One of my favorite films of all-time was "War of the Roses," starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. In the film, a divorced couple starts down a dangerous and hilarious path of mutual destruction, where the goal of each is to make the other person's life miserable. At the end of the movie, both parties find that while it was their goal to destroy the other person, they actually ended up destroying themselves. Just for the record, each character dies at the end.

I think about "War of the Roses" when I see the custody battle between NBA star Dwight Howard and his ex-wife, Royce Reed. Of course I don't expect anyone to end up dead, but it's already clear that Royce and Dwight have made each other's lives as miserable as possible. Royce recently called the cops after Dwight picked up her son from daycare at a time when he was not scheduled to do so. Before that, Dwight had filed a lawsuit against Royce for referring to him as a "douchebag" on the TV show, "Basketball Wives."

As it stands, Royce is now back in court filing motions against Dwight, stating that her son "acts out" when Dwight's nanny picks him up. She is also saying that Dwight misses scheduled visitations, and that she wants a guardian appointed to ensure that Dwight follows the rules. I am sure Dwight is suing Royce for something else, but I just can't keep up with all the drama.

Dwight and Royce's situation is sad, mainly because I've heard from quite a few sources that Dwight's actually a very good person. From what others tell me, he's not the stereotypically arrogant, evil NBA star that we read about in the news. He comes from a good family, goes to church on Sunday and treats others with respect. Now, I can't vouch for his behavior in relationships, but I'd be shocked to hear that he was some kind of Love Demon. At the same time, NBA players never cease to amaze me at how trifling some of them can be. I certainly hope that Dwight has not bought into all that, and I can at least say that like many other players, he got married entirely too young anyway. I don't know anything about Royce, other than the fact that I am admittedly perplexed about those who appear on the show "Basketball Wives." I guess everyone wants their piece of the financial action - and if your greatest achievement is to have hitched onto someone else's gravy train, then so be it.

While most of us can't dissect the dispute between Royce and Dwight, a few thoughts can be shared on the matter. Most of us have gone through relationship drama, and we know that it's not always a matter of bad people vs. good, but avoiding the trap of relationship war, which can seem like emotional quicksand from which we cannot escape very easily. Here are some quick thoughts on Royce and Dwight:

1) Do you ever wonder how two people who swear they are going to love each other forever can end up becoming mortal enemies? Kinda makes you wonder about love and marriage in the first place, huh? Some might argue that those involved in celebrity divorce deserve millions in compensation for their emotional heartache, but I'm not always so sure. I mean seriously, wouldn't you love it if all of the people who hurt you in past relationships had to pay you a million dollars for pain and suffering? Some athletes could avoid all the craziness by not getting married until they are at least 35-years old. That way, they've sewn their oats, gotten rid of the distractions, and can make sure that the woman they marry isn't just chasing the money. Many athletes are broke by the age of 35 anyway, so the process becomes much simpler by then. At the very least, they don't end up paying NBA-level child support on a retired player's salary.

2) Like the film "War of the Roses," it seems that Dwight and Royce are so intent upon destroying one another that they are hurting themselves and their child (Braylon) in the process. It's sad that the contentious relationships between couples can't be resolved for the sake of their kids. Both parties, in their lack of willingness to concede and consistent desire to one-up each other with yet another stupid court appearance, are ultimately creating a recipe for emotional distress on their young son.

3) Perhaps Royce and Dwight should realize that no one "owns" their baby. If Royce seems to feel that she has the right to control Dwight's actions with regard to their son or decide who does and does not pick him up, then she' s wrong. Dwight is also wrong if he thinks he can do what he wants, when he wants. He has to follow the rules. If you ever listen to some mothers talk about their kids, you'll notice that in some cases, the language becomes very possessive. The words "my baby" imply ownership, like a new car or a pair of shoes. The last I checked, it took two parents to make a child, and custodial parents who think they have sole ownership over their kids should have thought about that before they decided to sleep with the person who helped them make the baby. Both parents have rights and those rights should be protected, even if one party does not approve of the other party's parenting techniques.

4) Royce was wrong to go on television to call Dwight a "douchebag" in front of the public. Dwight is on national TV all the time, yet he has never taken the time to refer to his wife in a disparaging way. Insulting and disrespecting your child's father in front of the child (let alone the rest of the country) implies that you love yourself more than you love that child. If Dwight is a bad person, it should be left up to his son to figure that out, and it's not the mother's job to invoke her own opinion. This kind of behavior is responsible for the breakdown of father/child relationships all throughout black America.

Royce Reed and Dwight Howard are two young people who never seemed to learn how to love one another. They were also two young people who appear to be too immature to be married and/or raising a child together. At the very least, the NBA lifestyle seems to create a brand of narcissism that leads to people thinking about their own needs before anyone else. It appears that both people in this relationship want to "win," when everyone (including their son) is going to lose. I think that there are also lessons that the rest of us can learn about love, life and relationships, and how being married in the NBA is not all about the fairytale. I'm sure we'll find out more on the next episode of "Basketball Wives."

Floyd Mayweather Jr. Suspect in Domestic Violence Case‎

A former gal pal of boxing icon Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is claiming that she was assaulted by him Thursday morning at her Las Vegas home.

Las Vegas police confirmed that Mayweather Jr. is a suspect in the domestic violence complaint and they are looking to question him. The undefeated champ left his girlfriend's (Josie Harris) home after the alleged dispute and has not been seen since.

Harris, who is the Mother of three of Mayweather's children, has accused Mayweather of domestic violence in the past. Instead of sticking it all the way through, though, she chose to recant her stories and keep mum whenever police probed further.

As far back as 2003, Harris lodged a complaint about a dispute outside a Vegas nightclub. The young woman then accused Mayweather of assaulting her as the result of an argument over another woman. When the case went to trial two years later, Harris told the jury that Mayweather was in fact a "teddy bear" who could never beat her up. The jury wound up acquitting the welterweight boxer of any wrongdoing with regards to the felony domestic violence charge.

The former "Dancing with the Stars" contestant also had two previous misdemeanor domestic violence charges back in 2002, which he pled guilty to in court.

In 2005, the former Olympic bronze medal winner was convicted of using his fists in an unprovoked attack to pummel two women at a nightclub at the famed Luxor hotel in Vegas. He received a suspended one-year jail sentence and was mandated by the courts to attend counseling.

Recently, the man who Forbes magazine named "One of the Richest and Powerful Sports Athletes of 2010" became embroiled in a heated situation that has raised the ire of not only boxing fans but of folks from all walks of life. Mayweather went on a racist rant against fellow boxer Manny Pacquiao, who is Filipino. The 33-year-old boxer used expletives, racial epithets and even broke out in a song denigrating Pacquiao. He did eventually apologize to his possible future opponent.

Ironically, Mayweather's uncle and trainer, Roger Mayweather, faces a criminal trial for allegedly beating a female boxer. Guess the apple doesn't fall that far from the tree!

Mayweather is certainly walking on thin ice that is about to crack! Come out, come out, wherever you are "pretty boy!"

Marvin Sapp's wife, MaLinda has died of colon cancer.

Earlier this year, Saap had said MaLinda, who was diagnosed with stage 4 of the disease in 2009, was recovering well and given a clean bill of health by doctors. But, more recently, her health had deteriorated and the 'Never Would've Made It' singer halted recording new music and touring to be by her side. A few days ago, he asked fans for their help praying around-the-clock for his wife.

The couple, which share three children, have been married for fifteen years. Together they pastor at their church, Lighthouse Full Life Center Church in Grand Rapids, MI, where they reside. MaLinda has played an integral part in Sapp's music success, having served as his manager and executive producer on several of his audio and video recordings. Prominent Gospel Music artist Marvin Sapp recently lost his wife to colon cancer. Marvin's wife, MaLinda, had been married to him for 15 years and they have three children together. MaLinda was an Administrative Pastor at the church they ran together, the Lighthouse Full Life Center, in Grand Rapids, MI.

Before she died, MaLinda was a college professor and licensed professional counselor. The following statement was issued by 92.1 Praise Houston about the death of MaLinda Sapp:

"It's with our deepest sympathy that we inform you that Pastor Marvin Sapp's wife MaLinda Sapp has passed on today after battling colon cancer. It was confirmed on the Lonnie Williams show today. An official press release has not been issued yet but more details will be coming on the Yolanda Adams Morning show tomorrow morning! Earlier this year, Marvin Sapp was testifying of how his wife, MaLinda, was given a clean bill of health by doctors after being diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer in 2009. But then, those health concerns resurfaced and Marvin Sapp requested intense, around-the-clock prayer."

Marvin Sapp's song, "Never Would Have Made It" reached number 14 on the Billboard charts for R&B/Hip Hop songs. He recorded with the group "Commissioned" in the 1990s before starting a solo career. Their three children are Marvin II, Mikaila and Madisson.

To protect yourself and loved ones from Colon cancer, it is recommended that African Americans start getting screened at the age of 45. Colon cancer is preventable in many cases, so with early detection, you can fight the disease.

Pastor Terry Jones' Koran Burning Canceled

Quran Burning CANCELED, quran burning in florida

UPDATE:

Pastor Terry Jones is reconsidering the Quran burning as he feels that he was lied to about the relocation of the Ground Zero mosque. Imam Musri claims that the pastor exaggerated his words during Thursday's afternoon press conference.

Given today's recent developments, Jones has not canceled the Quran burning, but merely suspended it for the time being.
Additionally, Hisham Elzanaty, one of the investors of the Ground Zero property, has dismissed real estate mogul Donald Trump's offer to purchase the property. His lawyer, Wolodymyr Starosolsky, said that Trump's offer was a "cheap attempt to get publicity and get in the limelight."

UPDATE:

Defense Secretary Robert Gates did call Pastor Jones regarding the military's concerns that burning Qurans would put troops at risk, expressing his "grave concern." The Secretary urged Jones not to proceed if it would save a single soldier's life.

Pastor Jones is staying with his information that there would be a meeting in New York on Saturday, although Imam Rauf has not spoken to either Jones or Imam Musri and released a statement saying that the suggestion of a meeting was a surprise to him. There are still no concrete details about the meeting.

Since Pastor Terry Jones (pictured above) was supposedly guaranteed on Thursday that the controversial mosque cultural center will be moved, the Koran burning he planned to hold on Saturday will be canceled.

Jones and Imam Muhammad Musri, a very influential Muslim leader in Florida, will meet with Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the leader of the spiritual component of the proposed cultural center and mosque, on Saturday to discuss finding a new location for the proposed Islamic Cultural Center that was originally planned to be built near Ground Zero.

Musri (pictured below) said that the placement of the site at Ground Zero is unnecessary and has become a clear provocation for violence across the country, while Rauf has agreed to be a part of the discussion.

Quran Burning CANCELED, quran burning in floridaMusri thanked Jones for his willingness to take into account the safety of the troops and the public. All parties agreed that no one would benefit from the controversy except extremists and terrorists.

To assist in the relocation, Donald Trump is offering to buy out one of the investors at 25 percent above the asking price for the Ground Zero location. SoHo Properties, the developers, has received offers from parties other than Trump, including those who are offering three times the asking price.

While not building the mosque near Ground Zero is good news to many, the developers of the mosque cultural center say that it is not being moved at this point. There have been no words from the imam regarding the SoHo Properties buyout.

Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry is her top pick to play a young Aretha. Berry previously won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for portraying famed actress Dorothy Dandridge in the made-for-television movie 'Introducing Dorothy Dandridge,'

Denzel Washington, who the Detroit native visited during his Tony Award-winning run on Broadway in August Wilson's 'Fences,' told Franlin he's open to playing the role of Franklin's father, Rev. C.L. Franklin. 'Law and Order: Los Angeles' star and Oscar-nominated Terrence Howard agreed in-person to portray her dear friend and former The Miracles front-man Smokey Robinson. Nia Long is being asked to play the Presidential Medal of Freedom honree's sister Erma Frankin and she wants heartthrob Blair Underwood on-board to play her brother and long-time manager Cecil Franklin.

It is fitting that Franklin would seek out the best in gospel music to take on the roles of members of the world-renowned gospel group, the Ward Singers. Karen Clark Sheard and LaShun Pace are being asked to portray the women who most influenced Franklin's career.

Luv Coach Q&A: Long Distance Lover!

I met someone who lives in Florida who is single. We exchange pictures, talk and text. He said that when he saw my picture I was the type of woman that was missing in his life. He has a good job and is a church goer. I'm not sure whether or not I should give this a try. Is a long distance relationship a good thing? He is on the Tagged website and has plenty of women friends from everywhere. I asked him about some of their comments to him and whether he tells them the same things he tells me. My picture is not on the Tagged Website. I am a little confused but my heart is telling me to give it a try.

Long distance relationships can be great if you are willing to do the work and have created a strong, loving, trusting foundation. Many people do it successfully, while others can't get over the stress and loneliness of distance and choose to find some one closer to home. The question you want to ask yourself though, is whether or not this man is being sincere about his feelings. If you are already feeling confused then you must be receiving mixed messages. His words are telling you one thing; that you are the type of woman that is missing in his life. While his actions are telling you another; that he communicates with many other women on Tagged and their comments make you think he has been using the same lines on them. Your heart may be telling you to try it because you are coming from a place of neediness and you want this to be the real deal. Who doesn't want love? But you must balance your heart with your head when choosing a love. Due to the long distance you are unable to test whether what he says is in line with what he actually does. A relationship should be built on trust, not confusion and you don't want to start something only to find out its foundation is crumbling.

I have known my man for five years now. In the beginning we hit it off and were seeing each other for a few months. Then we lost touch for about three years. About a year ago he called me out of the blue and we started seeing each other again. Right now we just have one of those "friends with benefits" type of relationships, but I'm starting to get emotionally attached. I tell the guy "I love you", he tells me he doesn't want to hear that, and that he doesn't believe in the word. He lives with a woman, which he says is out of convenience because he has no other place to go. He also talks about his kids' mother all the time like he misses her or maybe it's the woman he is living with. I'm not sure because he lives out of town from me. He tells me he doesn't want me seeing other men. I told him through a text message that I'm starting to get feelings for him and I got this back in return, "Bitch f**k you and your feelings!" After all that's happened, should I just move on or bare with this guy?
Retta

Do you really have to ask? Move on, and make it quick! He doesn't believe in love and you do, so right there you two aren't looking for the same thing in a relationship. This guy is using you for sex and you are allowing it to happen. At what point in your life did you decide it's acceptable for someone to sh*t on your feelings? Why would you choose to give your love and your body to someone who blatantly doesn't care for your well being? People will treat you the way that you allow them to treat you. He is not going to change, so don't waste your time with someone who treats you like garbage. Dump him, then get yourself to counseling to figure out why you were willing to let this type of guy into your life, and how you can heal the wounds that have led you to this place in your life.

50 Cent: Floyd Mayweather's Baby Mama Just Wants Money

Iconic rapper 50 Cent weighed in on all of the domestic violence drama surrounding his friend Floyd Mayweather, Jr. who is accused of assaulting his girlfriend then fleeing the scene. The hip-hop mega star is angered by Josie Harris's (pictured below) allegations against Mayweather and feels that she is just an angry baby mama who is looking for a payday.
50 Cent: Floyd Mayweather's Baby Mama Just Wants Money

50 Cent took to Twitter in a tirade against Harris and her accusations, which, according to 50, began over a comment about how Harris kept a dirty house:

I speak to floyd every day he like my brother his babys mother did this sh*t before in 2003 dragged him to court then said he didn't hit her

This is crazy to me. I performed in club pure on NYE in vegas I remember floyd showing me a ring he bought her for $1M.

Who can u trust
Floyd said he feels like her girlfriend is using her and pushing her in the wrong direction

She has a girlfriend that stays in the guesthouse that floyd is paying for her as child support that is helping fuel the situation

I told him that's crazy. I know how he felt. I met her before so I told him she would calm down. Can't believe she called the cops

He bought nice clothes for his kids they were all over the place. His baby moma
[sic] said shes not gonna force them to wear clothes they dont want

I talked to him before and after the situation he wasnt even upset. He said he asked her why was the house so dirty she started trippin

She's claiming he hit her but has no bruises. Floyd went to see his kids last night if a fighter of floyd caliber hits u, u would b bruised

Another case of angry baby mama wanting money. Police are looking for @FloydMayweather I just got off the phone with him

As 50 Cent tweeted, Las Vegas police are still looking for Mayweather, after the Mother of three of his children called 911 to report that the famed boxer had attacked her Thursday morning at her Las Vegas home. Investigators want to speak with Mayweather to determine if they will arrest him on domestic violence charges.

The feuding couple have a turbulent past, according to police records. Harris accused Mayweather back in 2003 of punching and kicking her inside a Bentley as a result of an argument turned ugly over another woman outside a Vegas club. The young woman did file charges but two years later in a courtroom she recanted her story and insisted she had lied to police. The case was dismissed.

Reportedly, Harris plans on taking out a restraining order against Mayweather on Friday.

ACLU Seeks Federal Oversight of Newark Police Dept.

ACLU seeks federal oversight of Newark Police Dept.

For the better part of two years, we've been hearing how city officials in New Jersey's largest city finally listened to the crime-weary public and got tough on crime by lowering rates of several categories of criminal activity in the process.

Now we might be treated to the unfortunate story of how they really pulled it off.

With allegations of rampant misconduct and lots of excessive force used during arrests among Newark's police officers, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is asking the feds for oversight of the 1,300-officer department.

At this point, there are only accusations, but they appear to have some merit. The ACLU found 407 cases of misconduct, including seven deaths tied to officers who either shot victims to death or ignored urgent health complaints.

The city has paid $4.8 million over the past 36 months to settle 38 cases brought against police and more than 30 other cases are pending, according to the ACLU.

City officials say the ACLU numbers are inaccurate and add that the civil liberties group has been working with police on how to lower citizen-brutality complaints.

At this point, it's hard to know who is right, and without some context provided for the ACLU figures, like how those numbers stack up against other U.S. cities of a similar size and population, it's impossible to know whether too many Newark officers are brutalizing the citizenry.

More than 20 U.S. police departments are already under federal oversight, including Los Angeles, Austin and Detroit, according to the ACLU.

I do know, however, that if any part of the ACLU allegations are true, they could stem from a plan implemented by city officials more than two years ago, when the city was rocked by the execution-style murders of three students in a school playground.

At the time, the story that was being spun by city officials was that citizen-advocacy groups - spurred by the brutal murder - demanded safer streets. Officials responded with a series of anti-crime initiatives that worked in lowering crime rates over the next year or so.

The reduced crime in Newark helped Mayor Corey Booker retain his office in the last election.

If the ACLU allegations are true, though, we will get a fuller explanation of how Newark police used the tool of police brutality to reduce crime in the city.

Obama to go to Philly for Back-to-School Speech

The White House announced this week that President Barack Obama is scheduled to give his annual back-to-school speech on September 14th during the school day. This year he will be heading to the Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School in Center City, a magnet school in Philadelphia.
Last year, Obama spoke from Wakefield High School in Arlington, Va., which sparked controversy around the nation. Some conservatives believed that Obama's message was going to be political. Many parents decided to keep their children home while the speech was broadcast in schools across the nation.
The speech, however, was one of encouragement and motivation, telling students to take responsibility for their education:

"Every single one of you has something you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer," Obama said a year ago. "And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That's the opportunity an education can provide.
"But at the end of the day, the circumstances of your life - what you look like, where you come from, how much money you have, what you've got going on at home - that's no excuse for neglecting your homework or having a bad attitude," he continued. "That's no excuse for talking back to your teacher, or cutting class, or dropping out of school. That's no excuse for not trying. Where you are right now doesn't have to determine where you'll end up. No one's written your destiny for you. Here in America, you write your own destiny. You make your own future."
We're sure this time around the controversy will be a lot less and Obama will deliver a similar message.
