Malcolm X's Daughters Are NOT Happy with New Biography

Filed under:

From Yahoo News: Two of Malcolm X's daughters are unhappy that a new biography alleges their parents' marriage was strained and that their mother - and possibly their father - were unfaithful.

The marriage "was definitely faithful and devoted because my father was a man of impeccable integrity, and I think that most people, if they're not clear on anything, they're clear that he was moral and ethical and had impeccable character," Ilyasah Shabazz said Wednesday.

Ilyasah and Malaak Shabazz spoke to The Associated Press about "Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention." Author Manning Marable, a highly respected scholar who worked for more than 20 years on the book, died last week of complications of pneumonia just before publication. Malcolm X's daughters did not speak to Marable for the book, which draws upon thousands of interviews, government documents and private papers.

Dallas & Houston: Not About the Games

Houston, Texas

Butler's dismantling at the hands of the UConn Huskies Monday night in Houston played out as it was expected. Less foregone, and less important, was the outcome of the 2010 All-Star game in Dallas, down the turnpike, as we say on the East Coast.
The interesting aspect of both games isn't the scope (70,000 people in Houston, 109,000 in Dallas, respectively), the stakes (national championship/pride), or the Texas linkage.

Dallas, Texas. Source: Getty

Viewed through the lens of the host cities, the games offer a chance to see what urbanization as a social movement, and city planning, or lack thereof, mean when cities add 100,000 people over a three day period.

First, obligatory backstory: I run a sports startup, FanFeedr, and sensible frugality is the oxygen that drives a lot of decisions, especially around travel. Whenever possible, I take public transportation, in cities that aren't really built for it, like Los Angeles.

The NBA All-Star game in February last year took place on a cold weekend, and I took a bus from the airport to a train connection, waited an hour at the train stop, which is equidistant between Ft. Worth and Dallas, and then caught the train to downtown Dallas. Dallas has only one downtown, which seems logical, until you visit Houston and understand that the historical rival to its wealthier cousin in Texas has five downtowns.

The NCAA Championship game took place at Reliant Stadium, which is about a quarter mile from Houston's lone light-rail system. The northern terminus of the light rail line is downtown. We started our journey there, on one of the two-car specials, and rumbled south through the Museum District, then the Medical Center area. The latter is another one of Houston's five "downtowns," making the entire journey groundhog-dayish: "We are in downtown, again. Yay." The second to the last stop was at Reliant Stadium.

If you look at just the city populations, Houston is #4 nationally at 2,099,451 people and Dallas is #9, with 1,197,816 residents, based on 2009 Census numbers. This is very much like looking at the un-inflation-adjusted cost of anything: it doesn't really matter and someone who quotes the numbers should be discounted as a fool right off of the bat.

The more valuable number is the size of the relative metropolitan statistical areas. The cities flip rank when viewed through this lens: Dallas-Ft. Worth-Arlington comes in at 6,447,615, good enough for #4 nationally, while Houston-Sugarland-Baytown comes in at 5,867,489, good enough for #6 nationally.

Dallas and Houston have oil and energy money. After that, they diverge, as Dallas is just richer, and has diversified into video games, technology, and now AT&T's headquarters after their recent shift from San Antonio.

The other critical difference is that Houston lacks any city charter for zoning, so it is a pastiche of different flavors thrown together, making the public transportation and lack of pedestrians a foregone result.

Houston is also based near the water and super flat, making venturing outdoors similar to being in the tropics most of the time. Dallas is also pretty flat, but much further inland and less likely to swamp simulations outside.

In Houston, I had Sunday brunch at the Breakfast Klub, which is known nationally, thanks to this article in the Times. The line went out of the door, and took 1.5 hours, and what was striking wasn't the multiculturalism in the line, but amongst the couples waiting to go in. It was a small extension of another trend the paper noted in Mississippi a few weeks ago.

Dallas had similar local establishments, but the mixing didn't extend to either groups of friends or couples, which seems like a less-progressive indicator, to these eyes.

Both cities, zoning or not, require cars, and the car culture means zones of interaction. You can avoid a class or group of people if you wish. While the linkage between progressivism and high-use public transport may seem small, if we do accept the premise, then it is hard to understand Houston's slight leg up on its in-state rival to the northwest.

For me, the games themselves were secondary to the people-watching, the structure of each city, and each city's relationship to its centers of art.

Obese 6-Year-Old Teaches Lesson in Judgment

Filed under:

There's a good explanation for why those on the receiving end of childhood torment usually end up on top: the geek turns into the CEO, the freak becomes the artist and, in most cases, the fat kid is the life of every party.

However, some things have changed over time: any hipster will tell you that it's hip to be square, and arty style rebels like Lady Gaga and teen fashion maven Tavi Gevinson have inner freaks reveling the world over. But what about the fat kid?

Well, the fat kid is still being called names, hiding behind billowy clothes, and enduring uncomfortable stares from passersby. And while the country's new healthy eating initiative is aimed for the better, it's also spurned a whole new generation of health-conscious adults proudly wielding their disgusted, disapproving stares when they see an obese child on the street.

So what happens to the kids that aren't actually subsisting on a diet of Big Macs and giant Cokes? The ones who, despite their diets, monitoring and constant activity, are still feeling the sting of an expanding waistline and endless fat jokes?

They're just like LaNiyah Bailey, a 6-year-old, 115-pound elementary school kid who, despite her parents' efforts, cannot stop gaining weight.

Bailey, who lives a normal, active childhood, yet is 70 pounds above average size, has been called every name under the sun by her peers. While her parents, a healthy couple who have exhausted themselves with diet and exercise methods, have finally come to the understanding that their daughter's rapid weight gain is a presently undiagnosed medical issue, LaNiyah has decided to put an end to the name-calling herself.

Her new children's book, Not Fat Because I Wanna Be, and website of the same name, have launched LaNiyah into popularity, teaching children and skeptical adults alike that obesity doesn't always equate to a careless, unhealthy lifestyle. As her parents search for a cause for their child's condition, LaNiyah herself has shown the confidence and panache of a girl that's beating her adversaries one book sale at a time.

Yet while LaNiyah's case in particular teaches us all a valuable lesson on judging others, should we all stop doing our parts to curb childhood obesity before it starts? Absolutely not. If anything, the Baileys very well may have sparked a new investigation into the underlying causes of childhood obesity - perhaps this rapidly-growing epidemic might not all be at the hands of Chester Cheeto.

Glenn Beck Leaving Fox, But Don't Celebrate Yet

Glenn Beck Leaving Fox

On Wednesday afternoon, it was announced that the much-maligned Glenn Beck would no longer be on Fox News.

Many on the left -- and even some on the right -- basked in delight that this day had finally come.

No more melodramatic nonsensical monologues that stoked this country's baser stereotypes and fears. No more headlines that found new ways to insult and defame the sensibilities of all who choose to actually think.

Glenn Beck's had quite a run on Fox. Joining the decidedly right-wing channel in January of 2009 from CNN's "Headline News," Beck's already successful career was put on steroids -- at his highest, Beck had more than 3 million viewers for his 5 p.m. eponymous show.

And just how did he rise to the top?

Beck arrived on the scene at the sane time President Barack Obama was sworn in as commander-in-chief. Many Americans who rejected the Obama fervor sweeping the nation were dazed that a black president had finally come to pass. It wasn't that long after, that disbelief morphed into anger, and Beck -- more than Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and at one point even Bill O'Reilly -- distilled this world-is-ending sentiment like no other.

Up until about last summer, Beck reigned supreme. BlackVoices.com covered much of Beck's parachoically bizarre pronouncements one headline at a time. Below are a few of Beck's most stellar moments:
As much as there was a sizable backlash to the Beck movement, Beck became a voice for the worst this country has to offer. Insulting us and our President wasn't enough -- shutting down community organization ACORN and forcing out former Special Adviser for Green Jobs Van Jones were just a few of Beck's newly realized power, making his viewership go through the roof.

But alas, all good runs come to an end.

Right before his ridiculous Restoring Honor rally, Beck's viewership began what would come to be a steep decline. While folks on the left kept wondering how it was possible Beck's antics would continue to mesmerize -- and antagonize -- the public, his viewership -- albeit belatedly -- finally began to lose interest in Beck's chalkboards and doomsday spiel.

By 2011, Beck's ratings dropped to half of his 3-million glory days. Regarding Beck's dramatic drop, Business Insider contextualized it this way:

"[It's] worth noting, just in the context of this January, that the month was dominated by hard news, in the form of the [Gabrielle] Giffords shooting.

In other words, at the top of this year, when Giffords was shot in the face, 19 people were shot and 6 were killed, Sarah Palin and right wingers in general were blamed. Many said that after months and months of racist and often violent rhetoric, the chickens had come home to roost and a Jared L. Loughner was moved to action.

Suddenly, the right didn't seem all that sexy anymore, and as Palin and company attempted to back pedal from the homegrown terrorist attack, the public was moved to take another look at what these entertainers-posing-as-hard-newsmen were really representing.

Or so the thinking went.

Still, media sites, such as The Daily Beast and and Newser, predicted months ago that Beck would be dumped, because no one can argue with the numbers, and while it seems that a highly dysfunctional era may be ending, don't pull out your karaoke joints just yet.

According to the New York Times, Beck, who is being compared to Arianna Huffington and Howard Stern, seems poised to run off in to the sunset toward a media empire of his own, which would serve as a new home to his loyal fan base:

"Mr. Beck could follow a road paved by Oprah Winfrey when she started OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network in January. He could schedule his own talk show and the shows of others on one of the many cable channels seeking a ratings jolt. Or, following Martha Stewart's road to the Hallmark Channel, he could start smaller, taking over a few hours of a channel's schedule.

...

"Mercury Radio Arts [Beck's company], which is privately held, has not released any figures for the $9.95 subscription service. Last April, one month after Insider Extreme started, Forbes magazine estimated that the web operations earned Mr. Beck $4 million a year, twice as much as the $2 million he earned from Fox."

So there you have it, folks. Beck, who has made millions making conservative Americans more paranoid and hateful may very well create an even bigger empire post-Fox News.

Only in America can someone make a fortune corrupting the public's minds with racist apocalyptic faux news and become a multi-millionaire.

On the other hand, a leader can't be one without a following.

Clearly there are hundreds of thousands of people that support Beck and his Fox cohorts. As we involuntarily speed in to what is to be an even uglier 2012 election -- I almost didn't survive 2008 -- President Obama will have to contend with a massive Beck-Fox News-Palin-Hannity-O'Reilly-Limbaugh following that is diminished but powerful.

Malcolm X From The Huffington Post: Before any of us in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities laud Malcolm X as our new gay icon or castigate him for being a black heterosexist nationalist on the "down low," we might need to closely examine the recent revelation that for a period in his life Malcolm X engaged in same-sex relationships.

Also, before any of us in the African American community flatly dismiss these assertions as part and parcel of a racist conspiratorial propaganda machine that is out to discredit our brother Malcolm, we need, at least, to hear these nagging claims.

The singer arrived to the pink carpet in a skintight, long-sleeved white mini with giant ruffly detailing at the neckline. She contrasted the all-white dress with sparkly grey shoes and a detailed clutch.

While we think Toni certainly has the slammin' body required to rock a body-conscious dress like that, tell us: was she hot or not?

The Curvy Girl's Guide to Wedding Dresses

$

Filed under:

There is no day more special than the one in which you promise your life to another, forever. It's only fitting for every girl to want have the perfect dress, the curvy girl included. But we know it isn't always easy to find a look that is sexy enough to wow the man waiting at the end of the aisle, yet demure enough to avoid catching a few side-eyes from your soon-to-be in-laws, especially when you've got a few extra curves.

No worries. Once again, we've got you covered - glamorously. Here are a few tips to assist you in your bridal gown search. We've even included a gallery of a few of our favorite dresses for today's curvy bride!

1. Be careful with cleavage. A little is hot, but too much can start whispers. No girl wants to start off on the wrong foot with her newest family members by making a poor first impression in the form of an inappropriate dress choice. When teetering on the line between style and sexiness, err on the side of elegance.

2. Fishtail or mermaid styles that hug the hip, but flare below the knee, balance out wide hips nicely and look impeccable on hourglass shapes.

3. Don't get lacy happy. Or 'anything'-happy for that matter. An excess of fabric (i.e. ruching), frills or embellishment can have an exaggerated effect on shapely bodies, not to mention the fact that, if not careful, it can look downright tacky. Don't hide behind accoutrements. Let a flawless design or the crispness of clean lines play up your curvy body.

4. Think outside the box. Don't limit yourself to typical bridal retailers. Keep an eye open for a vintage dress that may suit your tastes. Or, if you are into continuing a family tradition by wearing an heirloom dress, but can't quite squeeze into your mother's old frock, consider having the fabric from her dress repurposed as a part of a new piece for your big day.

5. Be realistic. Fitted is amazing; tight is tragic. And it may not be as easy to shed extra pounds on a rigid deadline as you might think. Keep a close relationship with the person/team that is altering your dress and set realistic weight loss goals for yourself if you're looking to downsize. However, shrinking a few sizes won't make up for a dress that just doesn't work for your body type - even if you love it. Be honest with yourself about what works and looks best.

Try these styles out for size:

Minority Children Start Poor, Stay Poor

$

Children of color are four times more likely than their white peers to be born into a poor family and suffer a lifetime of consequences, ranging from diminished academic standing to increased financial insecurity, a report released Thursday found.

Beyond financial comfort, even practical dreams of education and savings remain an elusive idea for many nonwhite Americans. The nation's racial wealth disparity is more pronounced in the lives of children, the study, prepared by the California-based Insight Center for Community Economic Development, revealed.

"You could say that, 'oh these poor children of color, they are doing so badly. We should help them out of...generosity,'" said Trina Shanks, associate professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work, who authored the report. "But this is a different conversation. What we are saying here is look at the numbers. Children of color will represent the majority of children in the United States in 2024, 2024. Right now, so many of these children are living and learning in conditions that diminish their potential as early as two years old. If we...help families build just the most basic of assets, it can benefit the country over a longer period of time."

In about 13 years, the population of black, Latino, Asian, Native American and Pacific Islander youths is expected to collectively outpace the number of white children living in the United States.

Right now, Latino, black and Native American children under the age of five are three times as likely as their white and certain Asian counterparts to live in households with very little income and sometimes, zero assets, the study found. And even when children of color come from homes that do hold wealth-building assets, the value of what their families own is generally worth less than that of white children, according to the report.

That is why some white Americans who don't earn high incomes or build their own assets can still turn to their parents or other relatives for financial help when it is time, for instance, to move to a better school district. But many families of color don't have relatives with deeper pockets, Shanks said.

"There will be people who look at this study and say, you know, I can provide a little help to my family if the time comes," said Shanks. "...But what you are essentially saying is, you don't mind people who have historically had more continuing to have more. You are almost guaranteeing that inequities are going to continue over time."

Allen West Compares Dem Critics Funding Measure To Neville Chamberlain

Filed under:

WASHINGTON -- No shortage of hyperbole has accompanied the ongoing budget debates threatening to end in a government shutdown this week. And the perpetrators, it can reasonably be argued, come from both sides of the aisle.

Rajiv Shah, the president's administrator of USAID, raised the specter of 70,000 children dying as a byproduct of passing the Republicans' budget. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D -D.C.) called the idea of a shutdown the "functional equivalent of bombing innocent civilians." And House Appropriations Committee Chair Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) equated support of a one-week stopgap measure that would fund the Pentagon for the remainder of the year with lawmakers' personal appreciation of the armed forces.

"If you vote against this bill," Rogers said Thursday on the House floor, "you are voting against the troops."

And yet a statement Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) released on Thursday made even those outlandish statements appear relatively benign in comparison. The freshman Republican drew historical analogies between current times and pre-World War II Europe, comparing those who were unwilling to sign off immediately on the one-week stopgap measure -- which ended up passing the House in a near-party-line vote -- to Neville Chamberlain and his fellow appeasers.

The congressman's office had the following statement placed in the Congressional Record with respect to the stopgap measure, alternatively known as the "Department of Defense Appropriations Bill."

A Look Back At Black: My Two Cents on Oprah Winfrey, Vanity Fair, Regis Philbin, 'American Idol' and more
I've always had a strong opinion and every now and then I find the need to sound off!

Here in the BV Buzz, I've been sounding off on various hot topics, current events and celebrity issues since this column launched in September of 2004.

Occasionally A Look Back at Blackmy opinions have rubbed some the wrong way, and there has been the intermittent backlash from celebrity types and/or their disgruntled ex-wives.

Regardless, my opinion in this platform afforded me the opportunity to share my views and insight on the nationally syndicated 'Tom Joyner Morning Show' and on television channels like CNN, MSNBC, HLN, TV One, BET, TV Guide, VH1, E! and others.

Below are some of my favorite and most popular commentaries - from being a super fan of 'Grey's Anatomy' and wanting to see Katherine Heigl fired, to offering up suggestion on who could replace Oprah Winfrey and Regis Philbin.

A Look Back At Black: SWV, En Vogue, Brownstone, Groove Theory, Commissioned & more
Music groups makeup, breakup and some never get off the ground!

Here in BV Buzz we have broken stories about the formation of new groups like The Queen Project with Kelly Price, Tamia and Deborah Cox (they've since broken up); revealed the breakup of groups like TGT with Tyrese, Ginuwine and TankA Look Back at Black (I lost a bet on this one); and the reunions of acts like SWV, Commissioned, Brownstone, Groove Theory and En Vogue.

Though the music industry is constantly changing, one thing stays the same - music groups just can't seem to keep the harmony.

Even Destiny's Child who broke up on their own accord has
faced some post-retirement drama after rumors of a reunion sparked a war of words between group member Kelly Rowland and the group's former manager Mathew Knowles.

Contrary to previous claims that Rihanna and Chris Brown reunited in the studio last month to record a new duet, record producer Polow Da Don recently confirmed that the couple recorded the newly surfaced track last year. "The reports are inaccurate," Polow's publicist, Laura Wright, told US magazine. "The duet was recorded long before the incident." According to People, the track, reportedly titled 'Bad Girl,' was intended to be on the soundtrack for 'Confessions of a Shopaholic,' but the song was eventually recorded by the Pussycat Dolls.

Now it appears Kanye West and The Dream are vying to work on a similar project. "Everybody is trying to talk us into it," Dream told 'MTV News' of his and West's friends and business associates. "It was first thought of by me. I was in Miami at the time, and I gave Kanye a call and said, 'The best thing would be for me and you to do an album.'... Let's take the best of both worlds and put it on a CD and try to make something we can sell to the consumers. He says he's with it. We're gonna try to make it happen." For now, you can catch Kanye on Dream's potential third single 'Walking on the Moon,' which is featured on his newly released album 'Love vs. Money.'

A Look Back At Black: 'Real Housewives' Bring The Drama
They bring the drama each week on the Bravo's 'Housewives' franchise, and though we only really watched 'Real Housewives of Atlanta' and 'Real Housewives of DC;' both reality shows had stars that offered BV Buzz a lot to talk about.

For example, 'Real Housewives of DC' star Stacie Turner recently revealed to this column exclusively that she had become an African princess.

"It was the most incredible experience ever," the real estate mogul told us.

That's not all either. When A Look Back at Blackcontroversy brewed online with NFL star Willis McGahee and his relationship with 'Real Housewives of Atlanta' star Kandi Burruss, the Baltimore Ravens running back came to BV Buzz to clear up the scandal.

"I was expecting a little flack, but I wasn't expecting for it to be like this and have everybody trying to dig up dirt on you and posting all of these comments," the Miami-bred athlete told me.

Lastly, 'Real Housewives of Atlanta' star Sheree Whitfield has been open about her divorce and baby daddy drama, but when she implied that R&B singer Nicci Gilbert of Brownstone fame broke up her marriage, Gilbert reached out to BV Buzz to set the record straight.

"At first it made me very angry! Especially knowing the truth and knowing that's the furthest thing from the truth," Gilbert emoted.

To read more about those stories, as well as other 'Real Housewives' features, check out this collection of BV Buzz stories related to the popular Bravo reality series.
