Al Jarreau Undergoes Heart Procedure in France

Jazz singer Al Jarreau underwent a medical procedure to correct a heart arrhythmia. The procedure was done at La Timone, a cardiac center in Marseille, France, earlier this week. Jarreau fell critically ill while preparing to go on stage to perform at a concert in the French Alps.

At the time of the 70-year-old singer's collapse, sources say, he was having difficulty breathing and experiencing a rapid heart rate. He was transported by helicopter to an intensive care unit in nearby Gap, where he was admitted with breathing and heart problems. He was listed in critical condition.

The seven-time Grammy Award-winning performer was on a lengthy overseas tour that spanned countries like Germany, Austria and the Republic of Azerbaijan. Jarreau's concert dates would have then led him back to the U.S. and then over to Japan.

Doctors at the Marseille hospital performed a catheter ablation, an invasive procedure used to remove a faulty electrical pathway from the hearts of those who are prone to developing cardiac arrthymias. The procedure has a very high success rate.

Jarreau is reportedly back on the road to recovery:

"The procedure went just as the doctors hoped and expected. He moved out of the intensive care unit and has been working hard to recover and prepare himself for his return to work," says a spokesperson.
