Serena Williams may be out of commission for this year's U.S. Open, but her sister, Venus, is no doubt pulling up the slack. In her match against Roberta Vinci of Italy, she won 6-4, 6-1 -- easily putting her in the second round later this week. Venus did for a moment, though, aggravate a lingering leg injury:
"It [her leg] was doing pretty good, till I landed on that leg on the swing volley. ... I was pretty happy to get through after not playing in forever," she told the Associated Press. "Thankfully, after that, [Vinci] did most of the running."
Venus hadn't played in two months because of the injury, forfeiting the WTA Tour this summer for rehab. From the looks of her today, though, it appears she hasn't lost much of her step since she last played at the Wimbledon tournament. That's probably because she's representing the Williams clan by herself this time.
"It's not the same without two Williamses," she said. "I have big shoes to fill with just one Williams here."
