Mosque Protest: Man Mistaken for Muslim Draws Confrontation

If New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg were smart, he would stop granting permits for rallies and protest marches in the city related to the controversial proposal to build an Islamic center and mosque near Ground Zero.

I know that people have a constitutional right to protest, but the city can take away that right when the health and safety of the public is threatened.

All one has to do is look at the ugly scene (watch below) that broke out at a recent rally against the mosque proposal called "Park 51." Clearly, complete mayhem is just around the corner when people start gathering in public on this issue.

A black man wearing a white skull cap stood among a group of angry protesters opposed to the mosque project.

In the video, protesters chant, "No mosque, here, no mosque here!"

Then someone shouts, "Run away coward!" which seems to be directed at the black man.

The black man, says to another man, "Someone wants to know about me then ask me my belief. I'm not even Muslim, but I've got my belief about this ... [inaudible]."

The man with the hard hat is then seen approaching the black man. When the man with the hard hat confronts the black man, you hear the brother ask, "Why are you here?"

Afterward, the situation intensifies and the crowd surrounds the black man.

Eventually, the black man is led away and the man with the hard hat is shown trying to follow him, while people hold him back.

Is it a video putting on display the racist, anti-Islamic feelings of some mosque opponents? Or is it a mosque supporter wearing an Islamic-styled cap trying to insight a confrontation with an agitated mob?

Could it be both?

New York City is clearly a place where nerves and emotions are still raw, when it comes to 9/11.

That is why it would be best for mosque developers to simply move their proposal to another part of the city and engender goodwill among a huge number of New Yorkers opposed to the plan and reduce the chance for any acts of hatred against the mosque or its worshipers.

It's never smart to mess with a hornet's nest, and unfortunately, though Muslims have the lawful right to build anywhere they want, Park 51 planners are messing with a hornet's nest of New York City proportions by building a mosque near Ground Zero.
