'The Gayle King Show': Angela Bassett PerformsGayle asked Angela to perform the now famous "word-bridge" in the Broadway play called, "Mountaintop". Angela Bassett and Samuel L. Jackson star in the well heralded play, "Mountaintop". Mountaintop is the "reimagining" of the night before Dr. martin Luther King Jr. was murdered. Angela Bassett and Samuel L. Jackson are on stage for the full 90 minute play, there are no intermissions. EW (Entertainment Weekly) referred to Angela Bassett and Samuel L. Jackson as the King and Queen of Broadway, high praise. Gayle gushed several times stating she is a huge fan of both the play and the actors. The play first opened in England, where they worked out any small kinks. Oddly enough, when the play ran in England, it ran sans the much beloved "word-bridge". According to Angela Bassett, the word-bridge is how the director, Leon Talley, and the writer, Katori Hall referred to her powerful "monologue" delivered directly to the audience. Gayle said the audience clapped and gasped at the Broadway performance of the word-bridge. Gayle asked Angela if she was permitted to do a portion of the word-bridge (away from stage) in hopes of getting her to recite or perform a portion. It worked, as Angela quietly relented and gave a truncated rendition of the piece. Angela was concerned that the audience would not experience the full effort of the words because the many visual elements from the stage were not present. .
