Former Fugee-turned-potential-presidential-candidate Wyclef Jean is laying low these days.
Jean is said to be hiding out amid countless death threats until he has received word that he can, in fact, run for president of his beloved homeland Haiti.
Jean is competing with more than 30 other candidates for the island's highest political office. The elections are scheduled for November, and Jean is making calculated moves to keep both himself and his family safe from political fanatics who want him out of the country.
The Haitian humanitarian and mega entrepreneur is reportedly at a secret location within Haiti. He sent out a flurry of e-mails to the Associated Press, stating in one of them that he was still unsure as to whether or not the Haitian Electoral Commission (CEP) would even allow him to run because of questions surrounding his residency status:
"We await the CEP decision but the laws of the Haitian Constitution must be respected."
The Haitian constitution requires that a presidential candidate live in Haiti for five consecutive years. Jean was raised mostly in the United States; however, since the 37-year-old was appointed in 2007 as a roving ambassador by Haiti's current president RenéGarciaPréval, he is actually exempted from the country's stringent residency criteria.
Meanwhile, Jean's team of attorneys are said to be at the CEP headquarters arguing his case. There are also a few other candidates whose credentials also need to be cleared before they can run as well.
