Ground Zero Mosque Developer Rejects Paterson Compromise

It's time to start getting suspicious of the agenda behind the wrongheaded plan to put an Islamic cultural center and mosque near Ground Zero in New York City.

Gov. David Paterson presented mosque supporters with a reasonable and well-conceived solution to the controversy, which began when plans were announced to build just blocks away from where radical Islamic terrorists brought down the World Trade Center in the 9/11 attacks.

But Paterson's offer of public land for a new mosque site was rejected by mosque supporters, who refuse to relocate elsewhere in the city.

It is easy to see why many New Yorkers -- and the general public -- don't want to see the mosque complex, called Park 51, situated so close to Ground Zero.

What isn't so easy to understand is why mosque supporters are being so obstinate. Why must they have their place of worship so close to Ground Zero, especially when a viable and generous option was presented by Paterson?

Another fair question about the proposal centers on exactly where the money to build is coming from. Thus far, mosque officials have said they need more than $100 million for the building but have provided few details on exactly who is donating the funds.

It's time for state officials to put the brakes on this project, one way or another, out of respect for the people of New York. Let's remember, we aren't talking about some ignorant worries from a backwater town.

We are talking about New York City, the most culturally diverse community in the world, where no religion, ethnic group, race or lifestyle is unrepresented.

I understand one has to be careful when the state starts getting involved in where places of worship can or can't be located, but putting a mosque blocks from Ground Zero flies in the face of good taste and common sense.
