The video isn't easy to watch (see below), and it rekindles images of the Rodney King police attack in 1991. The only difference is that in the South Carolina assault, one officer administers the beating as opposed to the gang of cops who beat down King.
At least police have released the name of the coward cop who beat inmate Charles Shelley. His name is Oddie Tribble, and he was a sheriff's deputy for 12 years.
Shelley, 38, was accused of driving on a suspended license, having an open alcohol container and being in possession of marijuana. He was arrested last year on first-degree burglary charges.
Shelley is clearly no choirboy, but he sure didn't deserve to get his leg broken.
If Lloyd wants to really help his police department, he will bring Tribble in o his office with a squad of mental-health experts to probe exactly what made Tribble go off and whether he's beaten prisoners before and successfully covered it up.
Does Tribble really hate people who drive on suspended licenses? Is he simply a violent man? Did he miss his morning coffee?
After the mental health experts have there way with Tribble for a few months, they should have plenty of notes to write a book on how to spot poor policing and brutal law enforcement practices on the force.
In fact, Lloyd could institute an annual award and automatic firing of the worst police officer in South Carolina. Call it the "Oddie Tribble Award."
