R&B singer Kelis whose controversial divorce from rapper Nas became fodder for news sources everywhere for months has now reportedly stiffed her housekeeper for a mere $900.
According to TMZ, the housekeeper was receiving $150 a day from the entertainer, who only worked once a week. The woman is reportedly not only seeking the services of a lawyer but is looking to also file her complaint with the California Labor Commission. The housekeeper is an illegal immigrant but does she have employment rights under the law?
The woman might have a legal leg to stand on and may be protected under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).There have been situations where undocumented aliens working in the United States have filed complaints against their bosses and judges have ruled that they had a right to bring action.
Meanwhile Kelis, whose divorce from Nas was finalized in May, was granted $25,000 a month from her ex in child and spousal support. But it seems that the housekeeper is not the only person seeking a debt owed. Last month, the 31-year-old was hit with a lawsuit for failure to pay a talent agency for "goods and services" for performances on a variety of shows, televised and nontelevised, in the United States and abroad.
The lawsuit was filed in New York state by a company called Plaintiff Drive Talent Inc., which is claiming that Kelis owes $11, 817. The company is alleging in the suit that record execs at Kelis' label, Interscope, paid the money to her and that she only made partial reimbursements to them for travel, labor and production items purchased for her appearances.
