On August 28, 1963,
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. revealed his dream to America during the historic
March on Washington. With feet firmly planted on the steps of the
Lincoln Memorial, the Civil Rights icon delivered his
"I Have A Dream" speech to an estimated crowd of 200,000 people. This transcendent message emboldened Americans to release the shackles of hatred, oppression, and fear, and embrace the "fierce urgency of Now".On Monday, January 17th, in honor of Dr. King's birth,
Chevrolet is encouraging all of us to embrace that urgency by participating in
The MLK Reading Project. This interactive digital platform provides Americans with an opportunity to browse through a wide selection of Dr. King's quotes and record one that inspires us to live The Dream. By breathing life into the message of the man who sacrificed himself in the trenches of racial warfare and civil unrest, Chevrolet reminds us to never underestimate the power of words spoken into the souls of people yearning for change.
While there are many of Dr. King's quotes that resonate with me, at this moment in history, it would have to be the prophetic words spoken on the eve of his death that I find most relevant to today's socio-political climate:
"Let us rise up tonight with a greater readiness. Let us stand with a greater determination. And let us move on in these powerful days, these days of challenge to make America what it ought to be. We have an opportunity to make America a better nation."
