Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets was dealt a terrible holiday blow this week as his sister Michelle suddenly died at the age of 36. Michelle died of a pre-existing medical condition and leaves behind four children. Anthony announced that he is leaving the team to be with his family and will re-join them after Christmas.

The Nuggets organization released the following statement:

"Our entire organization supports Carmelo during this difficult time for him and his family. It is heartbreaking news, particularly during the holiday season."

I've followed Carmelo's career closely since he spent a year here at Syracuse University. Although my salary was higher than Anthony's, he brought far more revenue and recognition to the campus. Fortunately, he has been able to earn some portion of his economic value as a professional athlete. I am also glad to see that he's made the most of his opportunities.

Anthony's tragedy is sad and reminds all of us to appreciate those we love during the holidays. You never know when it might all come to an end. I wish Carmelo and his family the best.
