Nominations for the 26th Film Independent Spirit Awards were announced on Tuesday morning at the London West Hollywood Hotel and among the nominees were Samuel L. Jackson ('Mother and Child') for Best Supporting Actor, and the film 'Night Catches Us' for Best Feature Film.
'Winter's Bone' led the pack with seven nominations, including Best Feature, Best Director (Debra Granick), Best Actress (Jennifer Lawrence), Best Supporting Actor (John Hawkes) and Best Supporting Actress (Dale Dickey).
The Spirit Awards is open to feature films of at least 70 minutes, provided they have been made for no more than $20 million and played for a week in a commercial theater or been exhibited at one of six notable film festivals.
Films must also be determined to be independent in the judgment of one of the Film Independent committees that determine nominees. Major studio films can be deemed independent if they are made with "economy of means" and deal with "original and provocative" subject matter.
In 2009, 'Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire' took home five awards, including best picture and trophies for stars Gabourey Sidibe and Mo'Nique and director Lee Daniels.
The 26th Film Independent Spirit Awards will be held in Santa Monica on February 26, the Saturday afternoon before the Academy Awards. It will be hosted by actor and comic Joel McHale. IFC will be broadcasting the event that night at 10pm.
