Singer/ actress Mary J. Blige is close to starring in the Warner Bros.' adaptation of the Broadway musical 'Rock of Ages.'
Variety states that Adam Shankman ('Hairspray') will be directing and choreographing the musical, which is built around rock hits of the 1980s by Journey, Joan Jett, Bon Jovi and Pat Benatar. It focuses on a couple that meets at the Sunset Strip club Rock of Ages, falls in love and tries to stay together while living the rock life.
Tobey Maguire ('Spider-Man') will be producing the film, along with Carl Levin, Matt Weaver, Scott Prisand, and Jennifer Gibgot. The musical's creator, Chris D'Arienzo, wrote the adaptation.
The musical premiered in Los Angeles in 2006 and came to Broadway three years later, receiving five Tony nominations.
Blige, who's won 9 Grammy Awards and 4 American Music Awards, had a supporting role in Tyler Perry's film 'I Can Do Bad All By Myself.' She played a nightclub bartender opposite Taraji P. Henson.
The Bronx native is also slated to star in the upcoming MTV Films biopic on American singer/pianist Nina Simone .
