Although action-adventure film star Wesley Snipes just received a three-year sentence for tax evasion, he is trying to remain "strong and positive" in light of his legal drama.
Back in 2008, the 'Blade' trilogy star was sentenced to three years in prison for willful failure to file federal income tax returns. Luckily, his defense lawyers begged for leniency, appealed the verdict and Snipes was freed on bail to challenge the ruling, continue to work and even do some travel internationally.
Last July, however, the United States Court of Appeals affirmed Snipes' convictions, and he was mandated to surrender to authorities on Sept. 2, but a U.S. District Court judge granted him a postponement pending a retrial hearing this month.
After going to extreme lengths to stay out of the slammer, the 48-year-old celeb had his latest appeal rejected yet again and must now turn himself in to federal authorities to start serving his sentence.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons would not say where Snipes was to surrender until he was in custody, though inmates generally are placed within 500 miles of their residence.
Informed he "had a fair trial" and that "the time has come for the judgment to be enforced," Snipes refuses to be gloomy about the recent hand he's been dealt. His defense attorney Daniel Meachum said in an e-mail to the AP that his client is "disappointed" about the "shocking" judgment but is "incredibly calm and positive," Meachum said in an interview in his Atlanta office. "He's wasn't angered. He wasn't bitter."
Meachum expects the Federal Bureau of Prisons to take custody of Snipes in another five to seven days. The actor is in Atlanta, preparing to film the movie 'Master Daddy.'
What's next for Snipes? You guessed it! Meachum plans on filing yet another appeal on his behalf with the U.S. Supreme Court.
