Although early numbers on Friday suggested that Denzel Washington's latest train film, 'Unstoppable,' was on its way to winning the box office for the weekend, it eventually lost steam and came in second behind the 3D animated film, 'Megamind.'
With a $30.1 million take, 'Megamind' held on to the top spot for a second consecutive week and has a total gross of $89 million. Playing in nearly 4000 theaters and with 3D ticket prices, it was hardly given any competition.
Playing in 3,207 theaters, 'Unstoppable' brought in $23.5 million, marking Mr. Washington's eighth major starring role in a row to debut at over $20 million (the streak extends to 12 when adjusting for ticket price inflation), says boxofficemojo.com .
Coming in third place was the Robert Downey Jr. comedy, 'Due Date,' with $15.5 million and total cume of $59M in ten days. Landing in fourth place was Donald Faison alien film, 'Skyline,' which opened with $11.1 million from 3,100 screens at 2,880 locations.
Rounding out the top five was the Harrison Ford-Diane Keaton film, 'Morning Glory,' which took in $9.6 million. Since it opened on a Wednesday, the film mustered a weak $12.2 million over five days.
Meanwhile, Tyler Perry's 'For Colored Girls,' which opened in second place last week, lost 65% of its audience this past weekend to bring in an estimated $6.8 million. Although the heavily dramatic film has received positive feedback from audiences and has a dynamic cast that includes Whoopi Goldberg, Thandie Newton, Janet Jackson, and Kerry Washington, this marks the worst second weekend drop of any movie Perry has produced or directed. With a $30.9 million haul in ten days, and considering this is his first R-rate film, 'Colored Girls' should still do well for Perry and its distributor, Lionsgate.
