About 700 people gathered in a suburban Atlanta church to mourn Bobby Tillman, a young man who lost his life in a brutal, unprovoked eruption of black-on-black violence that stunned the nation.
Police are holding four young men and are searching for another in connection with Tillman's murder last week outside a party in the Atlanta suburb of Douglasville.
The four are accused of punching, kicking and stomping Tillman to death, after indiscriminately picking him for the fatal attack as more than a dozen party-goers looked on.
Tillman's homegoing ceremony featured ushers in top hats and tuxedos and Tillman's body, which was transported in a white carriage pulled by two white horses adorned with red roses, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
A gospel choir from Tillman's school, Chapel Hill High School, was backed by a three-piece band.
The pomp and circumstance around Tillman's commemoration will be over in one day, but it would be far more important if Tillman's death could help us meaningfully explore why our children find it so easy to kill each other.
Otherwise, Tillman's death will represent nothing more than another sad example of how we treat each other.
