Former NFL superstar Dave Meggett was sentenced to 30 years in prison Wednesday on criminal sexual conduct and burglary charges.
Meggett, who played with the New York Giants, New England Patriots and New York Jets and gained notoriety as a punt and kickoff returner, was convicted of raping a 21-year-old North Charleston, South Carolina, college student at her home last year. Meggett was already out on bond in connection with a rape charge in 2008, when the second attack occurred, and was also on probation at the time for sexual battery against his girlfriend in 2006.
The Superbowl ring recipient retired from the NFL in 1998, after the Patriots released him. The release followed yet another charge that he assaulted an escort worker, after a three-way sexual encounter in a Toronto, Canada hotel room. The case went to trial, and in 2000, resulted in a hung jury.
Besides earning the Walter Payton Award in 1988, Meggett was a two-time Pro Bowler and was even a favorite of famed former Patriots coach Bill Parcells.
At his trial, Meggett, 42, chose not to take the stand at his own defense trial. During the court case, it was argued, that Meggett and the college student had consensual sex and later got involved in a heated argument.
Meggett, who has had a phenomenal professional pro-ball career, plans to appeal his case.
