Cholera Spreading to Haitian Capital

The worst fears of health specialists in Haiti are being realized as the cholera outbreak that started in the countryside is creeping toward the huge, overcrowded refugee camps that ring Port-au-Prince.

The camps that drew the impoverished survivors of the January earthquake would seem to be a perfect location for the spread of cholera, which is passed through water contaminated by fecal matter.

Last week's Hurricane Tomas killed 21 people and triggered flooding that could also spread the disease by washing tainted water into communities.

Medical officials said at least 73 cholera cases have hit the capital. A few days ago, just a single case had been identified.

It's hard to imagine a worse scenario for the poorest nation in the western hemisphere.

The teeming camps are more like slums and are ideal breeding grounds for disease.

With water purification kits in short supply, it would seem that Haiti is in need of divine intervention to avert this health crisis.
