What The Heck Happened to Chris Tucker?

Chris Tucker
I am thinking about going to the Hollywood Police Department and filing a missing person's report. In the report, I am going to mention that actor and comedian Chris Tucker has been missing from the public eye for most of the last 15 years. There is a Chris Tucker sighting in various Jackie Chan movies, but then Tucker seems to disappear again until another movie is made. I am not sure if he is the exclusive employee of Jackie Chan, but I quietly wonder if Chris does anything outside of the decreasingly funny 'Rush Hour' films. Not meaning to hate on Chris, but I'd really hoped to see more of him by now.

I can think of exactly four times I've seen Chris Tucker since 1995. First, I saw him on 'Def Comedy Jam.' Chris was one of the funniest comedians I've ever seen on the show. Next, I saw him sitting next to Ice Cube smoking weed in the movie 'Friday.' Although we have to be happy for Mike Epps (who replaced Tucker in later Ice Cube films), it was sad to see Tucker leave the series. He single-handedly made that film and also helped Ice Cube get his filmmaking, non-rap career off to a great start.

Third, I saw Tucker standing with a shocked look on his face when the camera suddenly came to him after Kanye West threw a monkey wrench into NBC's Hurricane Katrina telethon. Kanye had just told the world that George Bush doesn't care about black people (which I thought was one of Kanye's best moments), and the confused camera man clearly didn't know where to point the lens. All the cameraman seemed to know was that the lens didn't need to be pointed toward Kanye, and NBC didn't point their cameras at Kanye for another four years until his appearance on 'Saturday Night Live.'

Fourth, I've seen Chris in the same place you've seen him: In all those Jackie Chan movies. Yes, I'm sure the money's right. In fact, Chris reportedly received as much as $25 million for the last installment of 'Rush Hour 3.' But in spite of the major money, I simply can't help but wonder if Chris was meant to be more than Jackie Chan's silly black sidekick. Chris' talent overshadows the 'Rush Hour' series and I would have liked to see him do more.

Now, mind you, Chris has done a few other things. He had an "interesting" role in the film 'The Fifth Element' (just watch the movie to get your own opinion). He also had a role in the film 'Money Talks,' with Charlie Sheen. Both of these roles showed the depth of Chris' talent, and both of these films were made in the 1990s. I am hoping that with the start of a new decade, Chris will shift his career in another direction. He's funny, capable and bankable, so perhaps his agent should advise him to step outside his typecast. At the same time, I'm not optimistic that he can ever grow outside his sidekick role, which has been the bread and butter of a career that just doesn't seem to have been what it could have.

But what I am talking about? Chris is the one with all the money. Perhaps I'd just better shut up.
