Anita Baker Sued by House Painters

Soulful songstress Anita Baker may be singing the blues these days since a house-painting company has filed a lawsuit alleging that she owes them more than $15,000.

Ray A. Smith Painting and Decorating, based in Gross Pointe Farms, Mich., has filed the suit with the Wayne County Circuit Court on Tuesday. A company spokesperson says that the Grammy Award-winning crooner hired the company last year for some house beautification projects, such as carpentry, plastering and painting, at her Gross Pointe home.

The company states that they repeatedly tried contacting Baker about her unpaid balance and that Baker had said she would pay the bill on countless occasions but never actually followed through with her verbal promises:

"The plaintiff has frequently and repeatedly demanded payment, but defendant Baker has neglected, failed and/or refused to pay said amount to plaintiff, despite her numerous promises to pay the Plaintiff for said labor and materials," according to the lawsuit.

Baker has suffered her public fair share of misfortune over the last few years. She's had liens for $465,733 in unpaid federal taxes; $15,952 in unpaid state taxes; and $3,470 owed to Pella Window & Door, according to county records. Then four years ago, singer/songwriter/producing dynamo Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds filed a $250,000 lawsuit against Baker, claiming the platinum-selling recording artist failed to pay him for a song he produced for her.

In addition, there was no "Sweet Love" involved in a much-publicized divorce proceeding between Baker and her ex-husband, Walter Bridgforth, Jr. The couple have been duking it out, regarding royalties, since they split two years ago.
Last June, Baker was put up to public ridicule by spectators and the media alike because of her off-color rendition of the National Anthem at the start of Game 4 at the NBA finals. Critics stated that she "fouled" the song and her vocals sounded like a "dying cat."
Baker's attorneys have not commented on the impending lawsuit.
