The ex-wife of Bishop Eddie Long, Dabara S. Houston, claimed in court documents that Long abused her during their marriage. Houston said that Long physically abused her when she was seven-and-a-half months' pregnant with their child.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting that Houston says she was fearful of Long's "violent and vicious temper." She also says that she ran away from Long by leaving their home with her son to get away for her own safety.

The couple married in 1981 and divorced in 1983. They reached a settlement in March of that year, in which custody of their son was granted to the Mother. He was 2 years old at the time.

Bishop Eddie Long's scandal has shocked the black church and the entire African-American community. Four men have alleged that he coerced them in to performing sexual acts. The plaintiff's attorney, B.J. Bernstein, has been criticized for her highly public approach to the case. Long's attorneys have started to fire back, hiring investigator T.J. Ward to join their legal team.

"This is an attack on Bishop Eddie Long and the church. Our plans are to take each allegation and look into them and behind them and look at the validity," Ward told the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

I am wondering exactly how the presence of the high-profile private investigator is going to change the dimensions of the case. I'd hate to see Ward dig up any and all dirt on the young men to make it appear that they are fabricating their stories. If the investigator is working in a forthright manner, then good things can come from his presence. But if he is there to try to make a lie into the truth, then I am disappointed.

I am not sure if bringing up things that Long may have done nearly 30 years ago makes much sense either. Long was roughly 30 years old at the time of his divorce from Dabara, and most of us evolve over time. Also most divorces are a matter of he-says, she-says, so it's hard to believe most of what you read in divorce papers, which are typically written by people who want to paint the ugliest picture possible of their estranged spouse.

All the while, each piece of evidence released to the public paints a more complicated picture of Bishop Eddie Long. His reputation is one of his most valuable assets, and I find it interesting that almost no one on his legal team is going out of their way to protect it. Perhaps they are saving their greatest weapons for the courtroom or they are waiting for the opposition to run out of bullets. There is also the possibility that they've simply got no defense.
