BP CEO Expected to Step Down and Receive $18 Million Package

$

British Petroleum CEO Tony Hayward is reportedly going to step down this week to be replaced by another man who has been running the day-to-day operations of the oil spill. CNN's Anderson Cooper has reported that the announcement is set to take place in England, which is five hours ahead of the U.S. The greatest shock has come from the announcement that Hayward will allegedly receive a pay package of roughly $18 million dollars, which is shocking in light of the fact that many of the victims in the Gulf oil spill have not yet been paid.

Hayward drew the ire of the American public when he proclaimed that he "wanted his life back," during the crisis. He has also been held responsible for increasing BP profits through the years at the expense of worker and public safety.

The House Judiciary Committee has reported that BP has paid out only 12 percent of the claims it has received from victims of the oil spill. This represents roughly $71 million out of the $600 million requested. Therefore, the amount paid to Tony Hayward will be over 25 percent of the total that has been paid to all of the oil spill victims collectively.

The actions of BP and Tony Hayward are not only clear reminders of how corporate America runs itself, it also represents a slap in the face to legislators who are unable to properly regulate a large overseas company. It also tells us that the capitalists of corporate America are essentially trained to protect their wealth at all costs, thus avoiding debts to society even when they are clearly due. Something should change as a result of all of this, but I doubt that change will happen.

Lisa Wu Hartwell: Leaving 'Real Housewives of ATL'

Lisa Wu Hartwell

BV Buzz can report exclusively that 'Real Housewives of ATL' star Lisa Wu Hartwell is leaving the hit Bravo reality series.

Speculation that the originating cast member from the 'ATL' franchise was leaving the show began earlier this spring when talk that she was only shooting on a limited production schedule surfaced online.

Now BV Buzz has learned that the 38-year-old real estate mogul, who is currently married to retired NFL star Ed Hartwell, parted with Bravo "amicably" over "creative differences."

"They basically wanted to script elements of Lisa's life and make her amp up the drama. She wasn't with that at all. Lisa felt like if her real life alone wasn't enough for the network, then maybe it was time for her to go," a source clLisa Wu & Ed Hartwellose the production told BV Buzz.

Hartwell, the ex-wife of R&B singer Keith Sweat, will be featured on "as many as three" episodes of the new season; however she will not be featured in the season three photos and opening visuals.

"The part where the ladies hold the peaches when the show opens up, she didn't participate in that shoot," the source added.

Hartwell I'm told "feels good" about leaving the show - though her rep would not comment on our story - and apparently already has several post-'Real Housewives' gigs lined up.

Hartwell shot a film called 'Black Ball' that's coming out and begins production on another movie opposite Robert Downey Jr. in Los Angeles starting in late Aug.

The biracial star - she's half Chinese and Afro-Caribbean - also debuted her first book, 'When The Cake Is Already Made' during the Essence Music Festival this past July.

The the Inglewood, Calif.-bred mother of three is the second original 'Real Housewives of ATL' star to leave the series. After season one, Bravo replaced former NBA wife DeShawn Snow after declaring she was "boring" on the series. Her slot was filled by singer/songwriter Kandi Burruss.

Real Housewives of ATL

When season three of the NAACP Image Award-nominated series returns to Bravo in Oct., the show will feature the addition of two new housewives - attorney Phaedra Parks and former model Cynthia Bailey.

Bravo had not returned requests for comment at press time.

Rapper DMX begins 90-day jail sentence in LA

DMX's freedom is pretty short-lived these days. The controversial rapper is headed back to jail, yet again. He surrendered to a Los Angeles judge on Monday to begin a 90-day sentence for a reckless driving conviction back in 2002.

DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was just released earlier this month from an Arizona jail. He served four months for violating the terms of his probation from a 2009 conviction for cruelty to animals, theft and drug charges.

The Yonkers, N.Y., native's latest arrest is a legacy violation from a 2002 reckless driving conviction. He received probation at the time, but his surmounting legal woes warranted a violation.

According to DMX's manager, his client is just eager to get his life back on track and immerse himself in his craft.

As if DMX's legal troubles weren't enough, his wife of 10 years, Tashera, has recently announced thatshe has had enough and is calling it quits on their marriage. The mother of his four children and childhood sweetheart has apparently passed her shenanigans limit. During their marriage, DMX has been arrested several times, been addicted to drugs, had a public affair with video vixen Karrine Steffans aka "Superhead" and fathered an illegitimate child with a woman who he claimed raped him.

Now Tashera is working on the release of a book about her life with the celeb rapper and also trying to cement a reality show deal with a major network.

This go-round in jail, the L.A. judge who sentenced DMX means serious business: the serial offender cannot be freed on electronic monitoring, work release or home detention.

A Lesson in Family Finances From President Barack Obama

I was happy to hear the other day that President Barack Obama is toying with the idea of letting his daughters get babysitting jobs in the not-too-distant future. The President's daughters, Malia and Sasha, are now 12 and 9, respectively.

In an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America" program, President Obama said: "What I'm doing now with Malia and Sasha is they're getting an allowance. They're starting to get old enough where they may be able earn some money babysitting," the President noted, adding: "They've got their own savings accounts."

One advantage of being the President of the United States is that you've got a huge platform from which you can not only help set the national agenda, you can also set a good example for Americans -- and indeed citizens everywhere.

By talking to his daughters -- and to the public at large -- about Malia and Sasha getting jobs, the President reinforces to everyone that money should be earned, not simply doled out, even in well-to-do families. Kids especially need to understand that money doesn't just magically appear. Sure, some people might inherit money, or marry into it. But most of us have to acquire money the old-fashioned way: by working to earn it.

As a Money Coach and a parent of three young children -- who are 12, 10 and 4 years old -- I was gratified to know that the President is teaching his children financial literacy. Even though the Obama girls will grow up in a very wealthy household, the President clearly wants to guard against them developing affluenza. He also mentioned that he's educating his girls about savings, interest and money-management. We should all encourage children to adopt good financial habits, the earlier the better.

My four-year-old, Alexis, enjoys buying "treats" from WalMart or getting new clothes from Target. But she also loves to save her coins and dollars bills, and have me read to her kids books that are related to money-management. One such set of books is a series of money-management titles I co-wrote for children, called The Millionaire Kids Club.

As I explained in an interview on FOX Business Network, these multicultural books, aimed at children between the ages of 5 and 12, teach kids not only that money is earned, but that kids have choices with money: namely that they can save it, spend it, invest it, or donate it.

Frankly, that's a lesson a lot of us adults need to learn too.

Democratic Senator Calls for End to Diversity Programs

$

Virginia Senator Jim Webb has gotten some attention lately by calling for an end to diversity programs. Webb argues that the programs hurt poor whites and reduce the ability to achieve racial harmony.

In the Wall Street Journal, Webb stated that a "plethora of government-enforced diversity policies have marginalized many white workers. The time has come to cease the false arguments and allow every American the benefit of a fair chance at the future."

Webb argues that federal diversity programs benefit immigrants over whites and blacks.

"In an odd historical twist that all Americans see but few can understand, many programs allow recently arrived immigrants to move ahead of similarly situated whites whose families have been in the country for generations," he wrote. "The injustices endured by black Americans at the hands of their own government have no parallel in our history, not only during the period of slavery but also in the Jim Crow era that followed," he wrote.

Former Virginia Governor Douglas Wilder has vocally opposed the column. He has also challenged Webb to produce data which support his assertions.

"If it's not for the civil rights movement and diversity programs, he would not be a United States senator today," Wilder said, claiming that votes from minorities helped Webb to get elected. "Things are tough enough without having people you thought were friends do things like this," Wilder said.

I was certainly surprised to read that a Democratic Senator would publicly oppose diversity programs. But he is from Virginia, which produces a different kind of Democrat than other parts of the country. I am not surprised, however, that there are many poor whites who agree with Senator Webb. Affirmative action programs are not supported by many whites across America, who see no need for aggressive commitment to reducing racial equality.

According to a Rasmussen Poll, 55 percent of Americans oppose Affirmative Action programs. Therefore, the public support is not there and probably never has been. Fortunately, however, much of this opposition likely comes from the Republican Party, which allows Democrats to protect these opportunities.

Webb's opposition is a serious threat to the Democrats, because he chinks the armor of the party and creates ideological divides. In fact, while Webb claims that he is helping to create racial harmony with his outlandish assertions (he calls white privilege a myth in the title of his column), he is actually increasing and perpetuating racial tension. Poor whites should not be pointing the finger of blame toward people of color. Instead, they should be pointing fingers toward corporate America and the rich, who hoard a disproportionate amount of America's wealth.

Senator Webb makes a solid point that many of our nation's Affirmative Action programs have been hijacked by broader diversity initiatives that don't include underrepresented minorities. Many universities, for example, are more than happy to release their diversity numbers, but "just can't quite figure out" how to collect statistics on the number of African Americans, Native Americans and Hispanics on their campuses. This is largely due to the fact that many campuses and corporations have started using anyone who is non-white to fill their numbers. Additionally, some forget just how much white females benefit from Affirmative Action programs, which have left underrepresented minorities in the dust.

What Webb also forgets to mention is that the strongest Affirmative Action programs in America are not the official ones. Many of these programs involve opportunities given by the "good old boy system," where unqualified men and women like George W. Bush and Elena Kagan find themselves getting opportunities above more qualified candidates (in fact, our entire Supreme Court will be almost completely full of Harvard and Yale graduates once Elena Kagan is confirmed). Rather than focusing on undermining opportunities for hard-working black Americans, Webb might be better off engaging in empowered advocacy for those he represents and spending time in Washington fighting tax cuts for the wealthy, who are the ones keeping his constituents poor. He's really got it wrong on diversity and is singing the same song as the Republican Party.

Michelle Obama, Sasha Going to Spain for Vacation‎

Michelle Obama, Sasha going to Spain for vacation‎

First Lady Michelle Obama and daughter Sasha are headed for a little rest and relaxation on a mother/daughter vacation to Spain next week.

The White House made the announcement on Monday that only 9-year-old Sasha will be making the journey with her mom. Twelve-year-old Malia is away at camp and will not be able to join the mother/daughter trip.

The Spanish press is reporting that the trip is scheduled for August 4th to August 8th at the Villa Padierna in Marbella. The First Lady is said to be meeting with the country's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. No details about their meeting or vacation itinerary have been released.

Although President Obama's birthday is August 4th, he will not be celebrating it with his family. Instead, the President will be bringing in his 49th year with a gala fundraiser at the home of billionaire Neil Bluhm. It is reported that each guest in attendance will donate $30,000 to the Democratic National Committee.

The first family is expected to vacation again later during the month of August on the Florida Gulf Coast for a weekend, then it's on to Martha's Vineyard for 10 days.

Recently, conservatives criticized President Obama for vacationing. What's wrong with taking some days to re-energize yourself? After all, do you really ever take time off from being the president of the United States?

Nigel Carr: Florida State Star Faces Multiple Felonies

$
0
0

Filed under:

Nigel Carr was expected to start for the Florida State Seminoles at linebacker this season. Those plans are probably going to be altered, now that Carr faces a slew of felonies related to burglaries he allegedly committed this week.

According to Tallahassee police, Carr burglarized a parked SUV, stealing the victim's book bag that contained her purse and other valuables. Carr allegedly dumped the items into a nearby trash can and police say they found the victim's credit card on the floor board of a vehicle being driven by Carr.

Surprisingly, Carr is also a suspect in another car burglary on campus and faces charges from alleged marijuana possession. His career is in serious jeopardy and may likely be coming to an end.

I am not sure what the reasoning might be behind this alleged incident, assuming that the police version of the facts are accurate. Nearly any crime involving a college athlete on the weekend or at night makes me wonder if alcohol or drugs were involved. Carr's charges for marijuana possession lead me to suspect that this is a strong possibility. For some reason, we've fed our young people a set of beliefs that create a culture of substance abuse as a fundamental part of college life. As my daughter prepares for college, I make it clear to her that she should be strong enough to not follow the crowd. I am not one to tell her to refrain from alcohol consumption, but I let her know that college can be a blast without risking rape, illness, incarceration or death, which occurs each year in alcohol-related incidents across the country. While we can't say that substance abuse played a role in the Carr case, this point should be made nonetheless.

What is also interesting about Nigel Carr is that he is described by his teammates as being one of the most reliable men on the Florida State roster. This is surprising in light of the fact that the multiple felonies against him paint a man who is undisciplined, unprincipled and out of control. This defines the contradiction lived by many college athletes across America: They are Einsteins on the football field and unintelligent in the classroom. Hard-working when someone puts a ball in their hands, but as lazy as water buffaloes when it comes to preparing for their academic future. They are ultra-disciplined when it comes to their athletic regimens, but incredibly unfocused when it comes to how they conduct their personal lives.

The contradiction of the collegiate athlete occurs because many of them have been told that as long as you can dribble a basketball or throw a football, everything is going to be OK. You don't have to learn how to read. You don't have to be responsible with your personal choices. You don't have to manage your money properly. You don't have to worry about your future. But what the athlete finds later on is that the man who only defines himself as an athlete has put himself into the same social trap that has incarcerated black men for the past 100 years. Athletes must become more intelligent.

One final and very important point is that when an athlete is arrested for robbery or found to violate NCAA rules by accepting money from a sports agent, the NCAA itself is at least partly responsible. Some athletes steal, borrow or take money under the table because they don't have enough to live on. A player like Nigel Carr, in a free market, would earn between $250,000 and $1 million per year based on the revenue he generates for Florida State University. Given that his coach earns $1.8 million per year off the backs of his athletes (who do all the work), we know that the system is inherently unjust. Some people commit crimes because they are stupid, and some do it because they have no other way to survive. While we don't know what motivated Nigel Carr, we can certainly say that many athletes struggle financially due to the greed of the NCAA.

Is History Catching Up to Charles Rangel?

$
0
0
Charles Rangel

Charles Rangel is being stalked by history.

Once upon a time, 40 years ago, a middle-aged Harlem lawyer went up against a lion of Black politics by the name of Adam Clayton Powell.

Powell, the Old Man - forced out of the chairmanship of the House Education and Labor Committee, one of the most powerful posts in Washington - had been done in by his own ethical problems and personal excesses, the argument went. Time for a new generation to take power with a clean slate in a new decade.

Powell vs. Rangel represented the powerful but corrupt past versus an uncertain future. The Old Man, known mostly on the street by his first name, was consumed by time and his mistakes, and Rangel, a former State Assemblyman, became Harlem's Congressman. Rangel and his buddies - Percy Sutton, Basil Paterson and David Dinkins - became known as The Harlem Mafia or the Gang of Four.

This Mafia grew in stature as well as power: Dinkins became New York City's first black mayor and Patterson had a son who is now New York State's first black governor.

But now the spirits have moved the wind. Rangel - forced out of chairing the Ways and Means Committee, one of the most powerful roles in Washington - is now the Old Man and he is being challenged by Adam Clayton Powell IV, the Old Man's youngest son. Powell, a state assemblyman who unsuccessfully tried to unseat Rangel in 1994, is asking for a new day for a new Harlem.

Old Harlem isn't buckling under the strain, since Rangel represents the Black uptown mafia past that is slipping away, not-so-slowly morphing into a white, gentrified upscale neighborhood. Old and New Harlem will vote on September 14th, Primary Day.

While the voting booth looms, Rangel is awaiting a House ethics committee report to be issued on Thursday. The charges include not paying taxes on a Dominican Republic villa, using four rent-controlled apartments for office space and creating a loophole for an oil executive who, in turn, helped fund the Rangel Center at City College of New York. These and other problems forced his ouster from the committee he waited decades to chair.

Rangel, known mostly on the street by his first name, has vowed to publicly fight this, even if it helps destroy his party's chances to keep the majority they have in the House. But deals can be cut very quickly in politics, and Rangel, as the dean of the New York delegation and, unofficially, the dean of Black politicos, is nothing if not an old pol.

How did this happen?

The same way it always does: Politician gains power. Politician does good. Decades go by. Politician decides that his doing good means he can also do well. Politician decides he has achieved enough power and done enough good to do whatever he wants to do. Politician goes down, and new politician gains power and does good, and then....

Ancestor John Henrik Clarke, a great historian of Harlem (and of Africa, and of...) liked to say that to understand Adam Clayton Powell you needed a small child and a very old man because the small child would blurt out that the emperor had no clothes and the very old man would agree, but explain that he once had clothes and that they were beautiful.

Fast-forward, re-wind, repeat.

Rangel vs. Powell. The powerful but corrupt past versus an uncertain future.

Perhaps it's not history that's stalking Rangel, but a ghost, demanding revenge through the Congress and the son, like some African version of Hamlet performed on the Harlem stage during a long-ago Renaissance.

Black Farmers Still Waiting to be Compensated for Racism

$

Black farmers across the United States have been the victims of systematic discrimination for several decades. This has been proven in court, and the United States Department of Agriculture has agreed to pay a $1.25 billion dollar settlement. What is saddest about the settlement, however, is that Congress has not yet approved the funds. This is another form of racism that the farmers must face, since their justice is being consistently denied by government officials who are insistent upon remaining stubborn.

The USDA came under increased scrutiny recently in the unjust firing of Shirley Sherrod. I am hopeful that the sloppy handling of the Sherrod incident is not indicative of the way the USDA does business. In fact, groups have been calling for the firing of the Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. At the very least, the way Ms. Sherrod has been treated should be a lightning rod to bring the plight of black farmers to the surface of our collective conscience.

Settlement issues began in a 1997 court case, Pigford v. Glickman. In the case, farmers were to be awarded $50,000 each to settle claims of racial discrimination. As a senator, Barack Obama sponsored "Pigford II," which re-opened the case and led to the $1.25 billion settlement. The House has already approved the settlement and the Senate is holding it up, primarily the Republicans. While Republicans say they would like to see the claims money approved, we all know that the Republican Party could care less about black farmers.

Cases like this one are part of the reason I can't stand politics. Elected officials sit comfortably in their offices playing games with one another, while there are real people engaged in real suffering as a result of their decisions. Farmers are on the verge of bankruptcy waiting for these economic injustices to be corrected, and there is no sense of urgency in Washington. I argue that for every day the approval is delayed, substantial penalties should be applied to the amount of the settlement.

Saddest in all of this is that the discrimination took place over decades, meaning that there are many farmers who died broke waiting for us to do the right thing. It's time for black farmers to be compensated, and the political games must come to an end.

Love Bytes: Maxwell & Selita Ebanks, Tameka Foster Responds to Usher's 'Behind the Music' & More

Are models the latest accessory for summer? Maxwell might say yes.

The R&B crooner and model Selita Ebanks have been spotted recently appearing quite cozy with one another. TheYBF reported that the two were spotted in NYC together last week at the restaurant Pop Burger. Later that weekend, Maxwell and Ebanks were seen on the scene at Russel Simmons' 11th annual Live Benefit Party in the East Hamptons.
Two beautiful and talented individuals? Sounds like the perfect match to us.

Tameka Foster Sounds Off on Chili
When viewers tuned into VH1 last Monday to watch R&B singer Usher's 'Behind the Music', they weren't surprised to see ex-girlfriend Rozanda "Chilli" Thomas discussing the couple's high profiled two-year relationship. However, people may have been surprised when they noticed Usher's ex-wife and mother of his two sons, Tameka Foster, was nowhere to be found.

Foster's absence and Chilli's presence left many people scratching their heads, so in true Hollywood style, Foster took to Twitter to clear the air. Bossip reports that Foster -- who claims she declined to appear on the show -- referred to Chilli as "anxious" to speak about her relationship with Usher. When asked how it felt to hear the former couple talk about their love, she assured them that their relationship was not a special case.

"They [Usher's exes] all were important, he 'loved' them all. She's delusional and doesn't matter," Foster tweeted. She went on to write, "I have no reason 2 be jealous."

Jessica White & Sean Penn Back On?
Maxwell isn't the only one who is reportedly into models these days. It appears that Sean Penn has a hankering for Victoria Secret angels as well. The Oscar-winning actor was spotted with his on-again, off-again model girlfriend Jessica White.

According to the NY Post, the couple was seen having drinks together with friends in NYC's Gramercy Park hotel this weekend. An onlooker recounts that the couple, "kissed, sat close and ignored everyone." The following night, White and Penn went to dinner with Spike Lee, his wife and friends on the Upper East Side.
Halle & Gabriel in South Africa with Nahla
Amicable breakups in Hollywood are nearly impossible these days. However, Halle Berry and her ex-beau Gabriel Aubry are proving to be the exception. The former couple, along with their adorable daughter Nahla, touched down in South Africa this weekend in good spirits. Berry will begin shooting her new film 'Dark Tide' for the next three months while her ex-beau servers as Nahla's full-time care giver. The former couple agreed to the arrangement after Aubry refused to be away from his daughter for too long.

According to RadarOnline, no one expects the couple to reconcile, but they are willing to get along for the sake of their child. The two will be living under the same roof but Berry has agreed to rent another home if things get sticky. Hollywood couples could learn a lot from these two.

Most of us remember the great on-field play of Maurice Clarett at The Ohio State University. Clarett was arguably the greatest or second-greatest running back in the history of the school, breaking freshman records set by Archie Griffin (the only player to win the Heisman trophy twice). If Clarett's career had not been shortened, some believe that Clarett could have been just as amazing as Griffin's.

Clarett led the Buckeyes to a 14-0 record and a national championship. He scored the team's only touchdown against the previously "unbeatable" Miami Hurricanes.

Clarett saw his amazing career come to an abrupt end when he was sent to prison for three years on charges of aggravated robbery and carrying a concealed weapon. After doing his time in prison, Clarett announced plans to return to Ohio State to pursue his college degree.

"This is a surreal feeling to be back at Ohio State in such a supportive environment," Clarett said in a statement. "I have looked forward to being back in school, and I'm doing my best to fit in with other students. I don't want to be a distraction or nuisance to the football team or to students on campus."

Many of us can agree that Maurice Clarett was a man with a little too much arrogance and a tremendous capacity to make bad decisions. At the same time, Clarett might likely be a genius in disguise who simply doesn't play by anyone else's rules. He filed a lawsuit against the NFL for the right to enter the draft in spite of not being three years out of high school. Clarett's decision to file suit was a good one, since we know that the NFL's rules are unjust and racist. Other sports that consist of athletes who are not black (tennis, golf, hockey, baseball) have no such rules in place to keep athletes from making a living for their families. Clarett was right to demand his labor rights.

Another area where Clarett showed promise is when he openly confronted Ohio State for the fact that they earn millions on the backs of players, yet refused to help him pay for a plane ticket to go to the funeral of one of his friends. Clarett was on the money with his argument, since Ohio State is a football sausage factory, serving up beefy black athletes for the American public's consumption. They fill their coffers with millions of dollars each year, and when athletes like Clarett speak out, they spit the athlete out and find another brother from the projects to fill his place.

Call me crazy, but I believe in Maurice Clarett. I think that once he finds a productive channel for his energy, he will be a source of enlightenment for other young black male athletes. Additionally, I would not be surprised if Clarett has plans to try out again for the NFL. He's only 26-years old and has the kind of talent that you never forget. If he can learn to take good advice and use his strong spirit for the good of his fellow athletes, he can be one of the single greatest forces in the history of The Ohio State University (which happens to be my alma mater).

Legendary Jazz singer Al Jarreau is currently undergoing various tests at a cardiac center in Marseille, France after suffering breathing problems and becoming "weak from the altitude" while in the French Alps last week.

According to his publicist, the 70-year-old Grammy Award-winner became ill on Thursday in the southern French Alps which forced the singer to cancel a string of shows in Germany, Azerbaijan and France.

"Mr. Jarreau hopes to resume his tour at the end of the coming week," according to a statement posted on his website. "Meanwhile, he has been quietly serenading the hospital staff to stay on point."

Despite the statement, Jarreau's cardiologist, Dr. Jean-Louis Bonnet stated today that the singer could possibly be discharged this weekend before continuing his scheduled European concert tour.

Adding, "everything's going well" and that Jarreau's "state of health is coming along quite normally."

Three Types of People Who Shouldn't Become Homeowners

I'm a big believer in home ownership. Having your own house can help you build wealth, get tax breaks that aren't available to renters, and create a great financial legacy for generations to come. And with record-low interest rates and real estate prices having fallen in many parts of the country, buying a home is now within reach for millions of people who were previously priced out of the housing market.

I'd be remiss, however, in my duties as a Money Coach if I didn't express one cold, hard reality about homeownership: it's not necessarily for everyone. As a matter of fact, there are some groups of people who probably shouldn't become homeowners - at least not anytime soon.

That might sound odd coming from a proponent of home ownership and the author of a book called Your First Home: The Smart Way to Get It and Keep It, which is designed to help you prepare for, find and finance the home of your dreams. But the fact is, I've also seen people get themselves into trouble unnecessarily by biting off more than they could chew and buying a home before they were truly ready. Read on to discover if you fall into any of the following groups of people. If so, you're probably better off renting, instead of buying a home prematurely.

o. You are Mr. or Ms. Entitlement
Do you think the world owes you something? Are you convinced that you could "get ahead in life" if only someone - the government, your boss, and yes, your local banker - just gave you a break? If you have that mentality, chances are you're not ready to become a homeowner. Owning a house is not an automatic right. It's a privilege that is chock full of benefits as well as responsibilities. But people with a sense of entitlement don't get that. They want the perks and rewards of homeownership, but only on their own terms. Translation: they seem to always want the easy way out. They don't want to sacrifice, get their hustle on, and work hard for the things for which everyone else has to work.

So if you're one of these people, stay put where you are. Keep shelling out money to your landlord each month. And the next time your toilet gets backed up at 2 a.m., call your superintendent and tell him to come fix it - immediately. After all, I'm sure you figure he owes it to you, as much rent as you pay.

o. You are Living in the Dark Ages
Remember the 1950s TV show "Ozzie and Harriet"? The husband went to work each day, while the wife stayed home and tended to the house and the kids. I don't recall their talking about a mortgage too often. But if they did, the serious conversation would've come from Ozzie, because he was doing "man's" work and actually earning the family's paycheck.

If you subscribe to the philosophy that a woman must be taken care of by a man - any man, including hubby, Daddy, or even a sugar daddy - you are still living in the dark ages. Consequently, your arcane views will probably hold you back from making a serious commitment to becoming a homeowner.

Why should you become a homeowner anyway? Why would you want to would go through all the preparation and hard work needed to buy a house when you can get a man to buy one for you? Being financially independent and learning to manage your own money is over-rated anyway, right?

o. You Have FDD - Financial Deficit Disorder
We've all made our share of money mistakes: sending in late payments here or there, wasting money on frivolous purchases, or blowing opportunities to save cash - even when we knew better.

It's one thing to have a few dings on your credit report, or to even feel like you're living paycheck to paycheck. But some of you really take fiscal mismanagement to the extreme. You are constantly broke. You couldn't save a dime if your life depended on it. You borrow money from anyone silly enough to lend it to you. Truth be told, your situation resembles something akin to financial spaghetti: it's a tangled mess.

Now, mind you, this is a far cry from having messed up in the past, but trying to do better now. Some of you seem to make no effort whatsoever to get out of your dire financial straits. In fact, you make a habit of digging yourself deeper in the hole month after month after month. You know who you are, too. Or maybe you recognize the following behavior in a friend.

The Symptoms of FDD

-You're the person who never seems to make payments on time; not your rent, your car note, your utility bills - not even the $100 your mother loaned you, which you were supposed to repay last week, and didn't.

-Since you can't ever pay your debts on schedule, you're practically on a first-name basis with the clerks and cashiers at the gas company, electric company, and your local cellular phone company, where you can be constantly found trying to get your service reconnected. You frequent these places so often that you bring 300-page novels with you, so you can catch up on your reading because you know the process and you accept those long lines as a fact of life.

-You've gone to Western Union so often that you have a Western Union card. (Needless to say, you're always waiting to receive money, rather than send it).

-You're more familiar with the inside of the payday loan shop at the corner than you are with the inside of the local bank. You live life on the edge financially and nothing is sacred. You've taken out credit in the name of your five-year-old daughter - and your six-month-old son.

-You regularly park your car away from your apartment, trying to dodge the repo man.

Unlike other people with run-of-the-mill financial problems, you're not just credit-challenged or economically impaired. Unfortunately, you have a serious, long-term money malady. I call it Financial Deficit Disorder because you pay no attention whatsoever to money - besides spending it, of course. Until you change your crazy ways, and eliminate much of the drama in your life, do yourself a favor and don't add to your woes by trying to get a home. It won't be pretty.

The good news is that you aren't banished from home ownership for life. Just mend your ways and then get serious - in words and deeds - about your finances. You'll know you've turned a corner when you can go at least three to six months without borrowing money from family or friends, missing a payment, or dealing with calls and letters from bill collectors.

Hopefully, you don't fit into any of these categories. But if you recognize yourself in any of these scenarios, and you want to make a change, pick up a copy of Your First Home, and discover the steps you'll need to take to become a successful homeowner - and not wind up in foreclosure.

BP Gets Louisiana Inmates to Do Their Dirty Work Cleaning Up Oil Spill

BP Gets Louisiana Inmates to Do Their Dirty Work Cleaning Up Oil Spill

Soon after a BP wellhead exploded in the Gulf of Mexico spewing a jillion gallons into the waters off the coast of LA, the British company started the business of cleaning up the worst oil spill in history.

Within days, cleanup workers were spotted on Louisiana beaches wearing t-shirts with the words "Inmate Labor" printed in large red block letters. Coastal residents, many of whom had just seen their livelihoods disappear took to town hall meetings to express their outrage. The community wanted to know why BP was using cheap or free prison labor when so many people were unemployed?

The short answer is that hiring prison labor is a way for BP to save money while cleaning up their mess. It's what we call a two-fer, a win-win. By tapping into the inmate workforce, the company and its subcontractors get cheap labor and lucrative tax write-offs. But cheap labor is only part of the story.

In a fascinating story featured in The Nation, Abe Louise Young investigated BP's use of inmate labor to clean up their mess.

In Louisiana, inmates who have maintained good behavior become eligible for work release in the last three years of their sentences. The Louisiana Department of Corrections calls them "trustees." This means they can work for private companies on the "outside." The trustees get to keep a portion of their earnings, which they can redeem upon their release. Participating businesses receive a tax credit of $2,400 for every work release inmate they hire under a federal program designed to encourage the hiring of risky "target groups."

The use of inmate labor on the oil spill is a hot button topic on the coast. When Young asks a warden of a South Louisiana jail about this practice he refused to discuss the matter, exclaiming, "You want me to lose my job?" A different warden, on condition of anonymity, said that inmates from his facility had been employed in oil cleanup, but declined to answer further questions.

However, some officials did speak with Young. A lieutenant in the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office stated that three crews of inmates were sandbagging in Buras, Louisiana in case oil hit there. "They're not getting paid, it's part of their sentence," she said. "They'll work as long as they're needed."

Inmates can't pick and choose their work assignments and may face penalties for rejecting a job, including loss of earned "good time." The warden of the Terrebonne Parish Work Release Center in Houma explained: "If they say no to a job, they get that time that was taken off their sentence put right back on"

This is particularly controversial in that this work could have adverse health implications for those exposed to the toxic chemicals used as dispersants. The scientific community has acknowledged that while the dangers of mixed oil and dispersant exposure are largely unknown, the chemicals in crude oil can potentially damage every system in the body. The uncertainty regarding the impact of oil cleanup operations on the health of the workers has led many to protest the use of involuntary labor in potentially hazardous conditions.

Now one may wonder why a company would use inmate labor at all instead of giving those jobs to coastal citizens? Particularly when so many residents are unemployed or have been put out of business by the oil spill.

The answer is not so simple. Turns out, these jobs are really sh*tty. And the workforce is not as willing as you might expect.

Young spoke to Scott Rojas of the Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission who stated that finding local labor to do oil-spill cleanup jobs is easier said than done. "These are really hard, and really low-paid jobs-I know agencies have put effort into finding locals to do the work. But they may not always have an easy time of it."

The Louisiana state unemployment agency advertises oil spill cleanup positions as "green jobs." At $10 per hour, these jobs would seem like an attractive opportunity. But Paul Perkins, a retired Angola Prison deputy warden and owner of five for-profit inmate work release centers, told Young that even as the agency is "overflowing with applications for oil spill jobs," the work force is inconsistent. "They might hire 400 people on Monday, and after one day of work, only 200 will come back on Tuesday."

And in some cases, residents feel like they shouldn't have to take these jobs. In a fascinating account of an encounter with some locals at A-Bear's Restaurant in Houma, Young recalls an elderly man speaking frankly about his son's financial dilemmas. His son is 40, married with children, and was laid off from an oyster shucking factory shortly after the BP leak started. He now walks around with a lawnmower, looking for grass to cut. When asked if his son would be applying for a clean-up position, he responded, "Maybe, no, I don't think so...that would be hard for his pride, you know? For that little money? No."

Work release programs are nothing new. From the businesses' perspective, you have a group of employees that will always show up and are never late. However, BP's use of inmate labor in a potentially hazardous situation smacks of prisoner exploitation.

At the same time, it also forces us to examine our lives in the context of bad economy. How large a role does pride and entitlement play with regards to the jobs we will and will not do? People say that many immigrants do the work that Americans will not do, and frankly, I always thought that was a load of crap. Now, I'm not so sure...

Woman Claims to be Michael Jackson's Love Child and Now Wants Money

Mocienne Petit Jackson, a Netherlands woman who claims to be the child of pop sensation Michael Jackson and Diana Ross' sister, Barbara Ross, has filed documents in a Los Angeles court according to TMZ.

The 35-year-old woman claims that she was born in 1975 when Jackson was just 17. Now here is where it gets a tad looney tunes. Mocienne affirms that at age 9, her grandmother Katherine Jackson devised a plot to have her abducted and secretly sent to Belgium, in order to protect Michael's pop idol reputation at the time. The woman alleges that there were seven co-conspirators who were involved in her abduction and all, she claims, were murdered.

Although Mocienne has lived in the Netherlands, it is only now that she has decided to come forward with her twisted tale.

"I want to formally claim my part of my father's inheritance," she told TMZ. The alleged long-lost love child also claims that she wants custody of her siblings, Michael's three children, so that she can offer them a "more normal life."

And, just like 'daddy dearest,' Mocienne reveals that she has been diagnosed with the skin disorder vitiligo which results in the loss of skin pigmentation.

So I guess the Jacksons should back up their Brinks truck at Mocienne's doorstep because hands-down, I'm convinced. Aren't you?

And if you believe this crock, I have a nice island that's for sale for just a song in New York City!

True dat, gangsta rapper DMX is headed to the pokey, once again. But not so fast - the bad boy won't go without leaving his fans a lil' sumthin' sumthin' by way of a videotaped farewell.

The 39-year-old, whose real name is Earl Simmons, turned himself in on Monday to a Los Angeles court for a reckless driving conviction that occurred back in 2002. He is scheduled to serve a 90-day jail term.

The video is 45-seconds long and the hip hop celeb talks at a rapid-fire pace of about 892 minutes per minute. He talks about how it was his decision to surrender himself and that the move is "one of the first steps toward regaining everything I've lost." In the background of the video, you can hear DMX's unreleased song "Time to Get Paid." (Pats-on-the-back to his P.R. team)

DMX also discusses how his relationship with God has managed to keep him here. He also admits that he has never listened to God before but now he is all ears. "My relationship with God has always been a good thing. He has always had his hand on me. He has always guided me, and now that I am actually listening and being obedient, life is so much better."

Terrell Owens Joins the Cincinnati Bengals

It turns out that the wide receiver nobody wanted has finally found a home. Terrell Owens, likely the most talented unemployed athlete in all of sport, signed a one-year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals. The deal is worth $4 million total, with $2 million guaranteed.

Owens and his agent are likely breathing a sigh of relief, as the season was getting closer with him still not being signed.

On his Twitter page, fellow Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco made the announcement to his fans: "My homeboy is a Bengal all our games have been moved to pay-per-view."

TO is now 36- years old, and the Bengals are the sixth team for whom he's played. Playing together with Ochocinco represents an intriguing and potentially deadly combination of receivers. This adds to the firepower from the signing of Antonio Bryant in March.

Owens is taking a paycut from his last gig with the Buffalo Bills. The Bills paid Owens $6.25 million with a $4 million signing bonus.

The Bengals signing is a great day in the life of Terrell Owens, but it also reminds us that we've reached the sunset of his volatile and peculiar career. Owens was arguably one of the most talented receivers in NFL history, but committed the mortal sin of displaying more confidence than black male athletes are allowed to display. He might have been silly at times, but he's never been the buffoon that Ochocinco has made himself out to be. TO never deserved the reputation he had in the eyes of the American public.

The hope is that TO will make the most of this opportunity and see another shot at the Super Bowl. But the sad part of the entire story is that we won't be talking about him in another three years.
