First came Oprah's "Million Dollar Wedding," a competition between six couples eager to win a wedding of their dreams. Now, a group of families in Aldergrove, British Columbia are getting their shot at a million bucks in the OWN Network's "Million Dollar Neighbourhood."

The show, which is being billed as a "social experiment reality series," begins filming in August and will feature a group of families working together to increase their collective net worth by 1 million dollars in just three short months. The families will receive in-depth financial advice, complete a series of investment challenges, and win prizes for their achievements.

Four Force Entertainment, the production company behind the show, is known for another town-challenge TV show called "Village on a Diet," in which the northern B.C. town of Taylor went on a health regime for a 10-part CBC series.

    Michelle Obama

From Frugivore: In a move that - if one pays attention to The Obama Administration's economic polices - shouldn't surprise anyone. First Lady Michelle Obama announced yesterday that she will be supporting an initiative that will allow the largest retailer in the world - along with other national chains - to bring their services to "food deserts."

This declaration comes on the heels of a groundbreaking study, which suggested supermarkets do not help low income families battle obesity and other food-related illnesses effectively. By bringing in retail heavyweights like Wal-Mart and SuperVal-U, they are essentially creating larger fast-food depots.

A New Orleans judge gave preliminary approval today to a settlement agreement that would end a class-action lawsuit against one of the nation's largest publicly owned health care companies. Under the terms of the deal, Tenet Healthcare Corporation and a subsidiary will pay $25 million to patients and visitors trapped at Memorial Medical Center after Hurricane Katrina.

    From the Root:

The Martin Luther King Jr. memorial is set to open next month on the National Mall in Washington, after years of delay and controversy. It's about time. But the approaching dedication has me thinking about another African American who campaigned just as hard as Dr. King for equal rights and doesn't have a statue on the Mall, or anywhere else that I'm aware of. (Efforts long ago for a statue in Harlem, N.Y., failed.)

Gordon Parks (1912-2006) is celebrated as a photographer, filmmaker, memoirist and breaker of color barriers. Before he was famous, however; before he was Gordon Parks, he had a one-year fellowship as a photographer at the Farm Security Administration. There, under the tutelage of Roy Stryker, he honed his skills.

Tea Party Rep. Allen West's (R-FL) misogynistic comments have provoked a serious backlash. After shooting off an incendiary email demanding that the "vile, unprofessional, and despicable" Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) "shut the heck up" and act like a lady, furious women lawmakers and advocacy groups "lined up to exorciate" the GOP freshman for his own "unprofessional, vitriolic and offensive personal attacks."

    From Show Biz 411:

Someone's sure got it in for L.A. Reid as he arrives at Epic Records. This is worse than when he took over Arista Records a decade ago. Reid has just arrived at Epic under Doug Morris's new regime at Sony Music. He had a hugely successful run at Island DefJam before that. Today's Page Six-totally manipulated and without one fact or named source-paints Reid as "Mr. Nasty" who only wants "beautiful people" in the office.

Six years after her death, the memorabilia collection of civil rights icon Rosa Parks -- medals, papers, even the hat she wore on her historic bus ride -- is in the hands of a New York auction house, its ownership in limbo, with a value once pegged at $10 million.

Her estate, with a cash value of $372,000 at the time of her death, is mostly gone -- eaten up by lawyer's fees.

    From Good.Is:

I was 11 when Snoop Dogg's first album, 'Doggystyle,' came out. That was gangsta rap's heyday, when MTV still played music videos by people like Snoop, Dr. Dre, Warren G, and the Dogg Pound Gangstaz, much to the dismay of my mother. At that time my mom was a principal at a middle school serving mostly low-income minorities in Tucson, Arizona. For her, gangs and the violence they wrought were an everyday reality, not entertainment. When I asked her if she'd buy me Doggystyle in a Wherehouse music store one afternoon, it was as if I'd asked her to buy me crack or a switchblade. "Absolutely not!" she gasped. That day, I had to make do with Digable Planets.

    Amy Winehouse
hadn't released an album in four years, hadn't had a hit in just as long, and when she performed on stage, the headlines she usually drew were for atrocious performances. She was an addict who, like so many performers before her, let her talents fall prey to a drugged-up lifestyle.
